Mantilla anyone?

I have been thinking about this, and if I do wear something, it would be small and discreet. I would wear black because most of my hair is still black and it would be less obvious. Rather than trying to hide that I’m wearing it, I’m trying to avoid drawing attention to myself. For several reasons, I sit on the front pew (one being that it’s always vacant). I don’t want people staring at the top of my head during, for instance, the Elevation. So if I do start wearing one, maybe other women who are considering wearing one will be quietly encouraged to do so.

Hmmm… and I happen to have a large quantity of black and off-white lace, so maybe I’ll make several and leave them in the vestibule. Sometimes the simplest, most obvious solutions are the easiest to overlook.

Thanks for bringing this up on this thread (and I did read some of the others, so thanks to those who pointed to them, too). You’ve helped me realize that it isn’t reverence vs distraction if I can make the option easily available to many women.

It will - I’ve been encouraged by seeing others at mass. Someone else mentioned the pride thing… boy, have I ever been working on that one.

Hi Moonflower,

I did the same thing for 2008, after a friend of mine called me out for saying I would wear one if I weren’t the only one.

It was hard for me at first, but I got over it. Wearing a mantilla definitely helped me with the pride thing.

On the night of 18 July, 1830, a “child” (angel?) awakened Sr. Catherine Labouré in her Parisian convent, telling her to go to the convent’s chapel. There she saw Mary, who told her she was going to give her a mission.

On 27 November of that year, Catherine saw a vision of Mary holding a globe that, Mary told her, represented the world – especially France, a country whose faithful had recently suffered horrible persecutions in the Revolution’s Terrors and was still going through “Enlightenment” perfidy. The vision changed to Mary standing on a globe, rays of light streaming from her fingers, enframed in an oval frame inscribed with the words, “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.” The whole vision “turned” showing the back of the oval inscribed with the letter “M” entwined with a Cross, and the hearts of Jesus and Mary, the former surrounded with thorns, the latter pierced with a sword. 12 stars circled this oval frame. Mary told her to strike a medal in this form, and that all who wore it after having it blessed would receive graces. This medal, seen below, has become one of the most commonly worn sacramentals in the Western Church and is known as the “Miraculous Medal.”

St. Catherine Labouré’s body remains incorrupt to this day.

I have had the same vision like Catherine but it was like a American Fatima visitation! It is amazing. My rosary dates back to her time I think it is from St. Catherine? It is brown olive wood but dark stain, and its chain that holds the rosary beads are copper but turned green over the years of usage. Its lable said made in France. And said 1830 on it does anyone think it is one of the rosaries she would use in her life I wonder if she had extra rosaries with her that some how ended up here in America?

I did feel a little odd at first but I do see others wearing hats, scarfs and mantillas…

Absolutely. I’m greatly encouraged by women I see in church who cover their head. One day I think I will start covering in the Cathedral where other women do - I can’t atm 'cause I don’t own a hat or a mantilla and I’d feel even more odd with a scarf. I see mantillas at the Cathedral, but no scarfes.

One day, I might even take it to my home parish. I’ve never seen a woman there wearing a head covering. I’m currently in the RCIA program and so don’t feel comfortable making such a ‘statement’ (bad wording I know), but as a protestant I never understood why women didn’t cover their heads. We believed in “bible alone”, yet… this bit didn’t count? I look forward to the day I have the guts… I daresay not until I’m actually in the church.

I just wanted to state some pointers on veiling and this includes that topic i am a youth minister and i know what i am talking about if you obey the fruits of the HOLYSPIRIT and as a female wear the veil chances are God is giving you the grace and mercy!

I understand the former requirements of canon law and their scriptural basis quite well … but a baseball cap?

Mantilla for me-a !
I think it’s feminine and a beautiful way to show respect for Our Lord when women cover their heads in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament. Wish the mantillas were more available. Many of the ones online aren’t what I like.
