Indeed they were called whimseys!!! I am not insane!!! Somebody else remembers them!!!

šŸ˜‰ I think the OP should wear something just a little nicer than a kleenex. She is having her marriage blessed, after all, and joining us in Catholicland.
My goodness, I haven’t thought about those for years. I remember the ā€œbig girlsā€ up the street having them, and just insisting Mom get one for me. I was insane about those two sisters, Bonnie and Gloria. They were in 7th and 8th grade when I was in kindergarten. The funny thing is that they were insane about my mother, who was way younger than all the others.

Ooh, thanks for that little shiver of memoery there. That was fun.

Sorry I dropped off, sisters–and my stars, this does feel sisterly. Makes me so happy, deep down in my almost Catholic soul. šŸ˜‰

I went to Jo-Ann after my last post and got an oblong, half-yard piece of very delicate, black Chantilly lace that goes great with the creamy white dress. I also got some black dye to try a larger size–I had plenty of white lace left over from my first effort. Anway, I need whatever I wear to cover my shoulders. For me to be so concerned about a mantilla, my dress is totally hoochie. It’s long, but shoulderless. Pray for me, sisters! But I’ll only wear it the one time to church.

So, the mantilla has to also cover my shoulders. I dyed some of the other triangles of white lace in tea to get an ā€œantiquedā€ white color which I love now. I just have to finish the edges with lace or a nice trim. I don’t sew with a machine, so I may have to be brave enough to try it by hand.

Does anyone know how to post a photo here? I’ll show you what I’ve been doing if I can.

Just wanted to stop off and say congratulations! This certainly is a very special day for you. I will keep you in my prayers. God bless you and your family!

Once you upload the picture to you computer, come back to CAF and this thread. Click post a reply.
If you scroll down on the reply page, you will see a section called ā€œadditional optionsā€. There you will see an option called ā€œattach filesā€ Click the ā€œmanage attachmentsā€ button. This will open a window. Click the ā€œbrowseā€ button and find your picture file. Double click the file. Now click ā€œuploadā€.
You picture should post when you click ā€œsubmit replyā€

As for your dress, could you get a bolero jacket for it? Then you can use the dress next Easter.
Found this, but I like this one better.

I purchased a white one and tried to dye it black with RIT dye. The result was a beautiful silver color. I would suggest if you are uncomfortable in white, to do the same as I did… it really turned out pretty.

Oh. I like the second bolero jacket. This one is fabulous:

amazon.com/2786-Bolero-Perfect-accessory-Available/dp/B0014TNOKO/ref=pd_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=apparel&qid=1205424285&sr=8-2

And my dress is just like that, but I’m so, so out of money.

Sigh.

Shoot, with all this lace I’ve got I can probably make a shawl. One of my mantillas is so big it is a shawl.

I bought some black RIT dye. So, I’m gonna try. I’ll try to figure out the picture thing, too. Now that I turned my book in I can fully engage in mantilla madness. 😃

mair francis.

I don’t get an option to manage attachments on my additional options. In fact it says in my posting rules that I ā€œmay not post attachments.ā€

Oh well. I might put some on my blog and I post a link. Just wanted to simplify and post pictures right here.

Thanks anyway, Patience and Love.

Do you have a sewing machine, Mair? It would be very easy even for a beginner to make the bolero. And not for 60 bucks either! You probably don’t need more than a yard of the lace fabric.

What I’d do is enclose the seams, making them like pseudo-French seams. Sew it right side to right side, then trim the seam allowance, turn it and sew it wrong side to wrong side. Maybe you know someone with a machine who could help you.

Once the fabric is cut, the seams shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. You wouldn’t need facings. Just sew a 5/8" line around the raw edge and turn it under, stitch again on the edge of the seam. That part could easily be done by hand.

When is it appropriate to start wearing a mantilla? I just recently purchased a smallish black one (as well as a booklet with two essays from college students on why they wear one). I would like to start wearing it (my grandmother wore it everytime she went to mass, and we decided to have her buried with it on because we couldn’t picture her going to the church for the funeral mass without one…).

Does it matter if I’m in music ministry? Will it be a distraction? Should I even care if it is and just do it anyway?

Thanks y’all…

If you like it, wear it. It’s appropriate any time you go to Mass, even if you’re the only one wearing one. I don’t think it’s distracting for someone in the choir or the cantor to wear one. We have Latin Mass every Sunday, and the woman who sings most of that wears one. After a time or two, you don’t even notice it anymore. I have dark hair and wore a black one – back when I wore one in the 1960s. If your hair is dark and you wear black, most likely no one will notice unless you’re actually face to face. In any case, don’t worry about it.

It was so much more simple in the olden days when there were actual books telling women what they could, could not, and should wear for every occasion and season. 🤷 😃

Well, I like to think I have enough common sense and good taste to dress appropriately for Mass without instruction.

But I do think it’s too bad that so many women and girls forget they’re at Mass and dress like they’re going to a bar. Back in the old days…I really am getting old.

A chapel cap would be lovely too.
Halo-Works has nice ones. Put chapel cap or chapel veil into the search bar. Or search for the Esther veil.

I can’t imagine that a Mantilla should be distracting. I find the scanty outfits of some parishioners much more so than the occasional devout woman who wears this charming head-covering.

Okay, first…

Those are great patterns. I’m going to pray and trust God’s provision. I don’t have a machine, but I may be able to enlist the help of a crafty chica girlfriend. So, we’ll see.

Now…

Monsterkittie,

I bought that booklet and a small black chapel veil. Love 'em! Hey, did you get them from Monk Rock? I love Monk Rock’s apostolate so much. But I digress…

I started veiling even before I became interested in the Catholic church. At my Orthodox parish I covered my head all the time. And usually it was only myself and an older woman ā€œFrom the old countryā€ though don’t ask me which ā€œoldā€ country, did it. I was inspired by some African American Orthodox women I know that I attend an annual conference with regarding ancient Christianity and Africa Americans. They are lovely, holy women, and their piety inspired me and stirred my desire for head coverings. One woman I love deeply said, "I feel naked if my head is not covered in church. And I do it because the Theotokos did it. I love that I can share this simple thing with the Mother of God. I’ve never seen an image of her with her hair uncovered.

I began to research and look at many styles. This wasn’t uncomfortable for me at all. When I wore African clothes more I rocked all kind of geles or colorful head wraps. But now, the Holy Spirit was drawing me to cover my head as a private devotion. I truly feel it was a call. It’s like I something I read a few days ago.ā€œYour heart has to be veiled first.ā€ Or something like that. Bottom line: let your heart (and the Holy Spirit) lead you.

I just wanted to be above all Christ’s bride. When I cover my head its only for Him, so I don’t worry that at the Catholic parish I go to now no one else does it. I don’t make a big honkin’ deal out of it. I discreetly remove it after mass during coffee hour and have a great time, and nobody has said a thing to me. Once I forgot it, but I didn’t get barred entrance. And I don’t mind that its not something the sisters at my church (except a visiting nun who comes sometimes) does. We all have the things that appeal to us. If nobody at my church prayed the chaplet of the Holy Wounds I would. I love it, and it makes me feel closer to Jesus.

I’m going to Adoration for the first time starting this Holy Week. Adoration is a major draw and part and parcel of why I’ve asked to be received into the church. I will joyfully wear a mantilla before the Lord. I’m so excited.

Man, do I ever sound like a crazy convert. I gotta join that group. Let me know how it goes for you.

mair francis

p.s. anybody have experience in Adoration? Do I just show up and adore? Or do I have to sign up in advance. I have no clue how to do it. Maybe I should start a new thread for that.

I have two mantillas-
Black for Ordinary Time and Triduum, and Cream for Christmas/Christmas Season and for Easter/Easter Season. I think it’s a pretty good plan.
I like the idea of cream. I only have black & white. I’m going to try to tea-dye one of mine & see how it works!

Pretty much show up, unless your parish has a need for volunteers to stay with the Blessed Sacrament (Who should never be left alone), or you are going in the middle of the night and need a key.

Okay. I posted some pictures on my blog. Fair warning, my blog readers have been with me for years, and we can get pretty silly, so forgive me if I offend you. But this really is important to me. I just happen to realize how paradoxical I can be (and not in a good way).

I like them all, but I think for your dress A would be my favorite!
