I’ve searched several threads on mantillas and head covering and I still have a question.

I feel this may be a silly question for some but when do you put a mantilla/chapel cap on? If this was a hat or scarf:byzsoc:, I imagine I would have been wearing out of the house.

I would like to wear it to adoration and I can just pause before going into the chapel to do this. But what about wearing a mantilla for Mass? Is it okay to put it on in the pew or is that like putting on lipstick in public? I have gone to a TLM (that’s what they still call it there) a few times and I would like to wear my mom’s mantilla the next time I have the opportunity to go.

I usually put mine on in the vestibule before going into the church, although a time or two I have walked into church with it in my hand having forgotten to put it on. It’s called having a “senior moment”.😃

Right before I hop out of the car in the church parking lot, usually.

I put mine on right before walking into the building and take it off as soon as I get out. Ive seen some women who put it on at home and some who put it on as they walk into the building. So I would say just have it on when you walk in or as quickly as you can after that.

It depends.

If it is one that requires a couple of pins then I do it in the car once we get to Church.

If I am wearing a hat in the winter, then I will usually wear my hat into the Church then take off my hat and slip the veil over my head once I’m settled in my pew, then kneel to pray. (I don’t wear dorky stocking caps or the like, my winter hats are velvet with a small brim. And sometimes I just wear my hat instead of a chapel veil.)

Sometimes I carry it if it is windy and put it on in the vestibule (we enter through a side door that has a teensy vestibule and then opens into the Church, parallel with the communion rail.

I don’t typically put it on in the pew if I can help it, but sometimes it just works out that way. I prefer to walk into the Church fully dressed, and that includes my veil.

Thank you for your replies. I can see that this will help me to me more recollected as I walk in to the church building.

We place ours on at home mostly. But, if not then prior to entering the sanctuary.

Sometimes, if the weather is mild, I just put it on in the car.

Sometimes, if the weather is fierce, I put it on in the vestibule.

Sometimes, if the weather is fierce and there’s no vestibule, I put it on in the pew after I take my hat off.

Sometimes, if the weather is fierce, and the church is cold, I just leave my hat on.

Sometimes I’ve seen some ladies kiss their mantillas when they put them on or take them off. I don’t do this, but I do kiss my Rosary.

Sometimes I’ve seen some ladies fold their mantillas carefully into a little triangle, like it’s a flag. I like to do that. It keeps it nice that way, not all crumpled, but I feel a little like I’m in the army, though.

Last night I had a dream I was at Mass and suddenly realized I had no head covering on. :o Have you ever had a dream like that? Like you’re not completely dressed and then you’re in some public place. I couldn’t get out of the pew, because I was blocked in. Then I woke up. Ah, only a dream…🙂

I do this as well, but never thought of the army before. 😃 But if you think about it, we are indeed in an army, defending the Faith every day!!

Oh yes - I’ve had these dreams before - I’m always just horrified that I’m not properly covered up!! :o

Yes, that is exactly what I thought, too!

Liza, would you believe I had another dream last night where I was in church? Nothing about mantillas this time, but it’s the second night in a row that I was at a wedding…What does that mean?
