Me and my mother are packing to prepare to move in the near future. We attended the Saturday evening Mass for Sunday today because we knew we would have to work most of this weekend. My question is: will my helping out with the move tomorrow be violating the Lord’s command to keep the Sabbath day holy? Will I be in mortal sin if I do any manual labor?

I have noticed when this is addressed in an examination of conscience, that manual work is said to be sinful when done for more than “several” hours on a Sunday. If you give it three or four good hours tomorrow, then devote some time to the prayer and rest proper to Sunday, I think you’ll be fine. Also, preparing to move is an extraordinary circumstance, during which you might allow yourself a bit of extra time to help out.

The Sabbath day is not Sunday it is Saturday
Exodus 20:8-11 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

In Isaiah we are taught how to keep it.

Isaiah 58:13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

We are no longer Jews. Old Testament laws are fulfilled by the New Law. The Church, in honor of the Resurrection of Our Lord, has transferred the observance of the Sabbath to Sunday. Each Sunday is a little celebration of Easter.

Having met the requirements for Mass and prayer, in a situation like this one could work through thr night so to speak. Like farmers with hay in the field and rain coming, one does what has to be done. To be doing this every Sunday would be a mistake, particularly if the Sunday work, even if not manual, is the same kind of work one does all the rest of the week. Usually homework for school and such like or a couple of hours dedicated to some other labor would not be a problem.

Moving on Sunday is not manual labor as if it were a job. It is unavoidable. You are honoring your mothers request.

I don’t beleive anyone has the authority to change the laws of God. The fact that the Catholic church thinks to change the fourth commandment is merely a fulfillment of prophecy Dan.7:25
And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. According to Heb.9:16 For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
17 For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. And Galations 3:15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.
The New Testament could not be changed by the Catholic church or anyone else after the death of Christ.

Yours in Christ, Richard

Where does it say in any of these passages that the Sabbath is on Saturday? Way back when people did not have a calender so how would they when it was saturday?

Oh somebody needs to tell Jesus He rose on the wrong day!

And while you are at it call the Holy Spirit and tell Him He should not have showed up on Pentecost because that was on Sunday too!

Jesus is God and He,not His church, moved it to Sunday!

He can do that!:yup:

I found some Scripture for you

**Acts 20:7 **
7On the **first day of the week **we came together to break bread. Paul spoke to the people and, because he intended to leave the next day, kept on talking until midnight.

**1 Corinthians 16:2 **
2 On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.

**
Colossians 2:16-17 **

16Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

**Hebrews 4:8-9 **
8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. 9 There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God;

**Revelation 1:10 **
10 On the **Lord’s Day **I was in the Spirit, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet,

The seventh day is Saturday. By the way the calender was given to us in Gen. 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.
Your not suggesting that God gave mankind the Sabbath and then gave him no way of knowing which day that was are you?
The seven day progression of days has stayed with us since the creation.

I don’t understand what you are getting at with these verses!
