Today, I was able to read through a copy of the Manual on Indulgences for about an hour. The book itself isn’t large (170 some pages) and is available through the USCCB website.

I got a good idea of the reasoning behind the plenary and partial indulgences from the temporal punishment that my sins created in others and in society.

It mentions particular days of Mass attendance and prayers. Prayers on the feast of the Saints for the day, etc.

I was wondering what the experiences are of the people here with the Manual?

At daily Mass, our priest talks about the Saint of the day, but he’s not mentioned the indulgence granted for prayers said at Mass for the particular saint. By chance is that included within the Liturgy of the Mass when the saints name is incorporated in with the prayers for the Church?
 
The indulgence is done fully on your part. Your priest doesn’t have to mention anything during the mass if, for example, the indulgenced act is going to a certain mass.

I’d wager most Catholics don’t know what an indulgence is, and probably the ones who do think they’re “not Vatican II” and erroneously think they don’t exist anymore.

The reason your priest doesn’t mention them is probably because most people don’t perform indulgences anymore.
 
You might want to also read the Raccolta.

Remember that along with the particular conditions of the indulgence, you must received the Blessed Sacrament, go to Confession within the octave of gaining the indulgence, and say prayers for the Pope.

As far as I am aware, the Raccolta has been superceded by the Handbook of Indulgences. The publication date of mine is 1991.

Good point, but some folks won’t accept anything after Vatican II. 😉

It is still good reading. Your 1991 Handbook will also not have any indulgences granted by ordinaries since it was published.
