Many Adams and Eves?

Your question is based on a false assumption. Those 1000 people are called the “bottleneck.” The earth’s population was decimated by a natural disaster, a volcano IIRC and it is estimated that only 1000 remained alive. Those 1000 people were all descended from the original two, Adam and Eve.

I believe science has proven through DNA that all humans are descended from one man and one woman.
Can anyone post a link to information on this?

One first dad.

One first mom.

We are all descended from these two. Further, if all of humanity was wiped out in the flood (enjoying the prospect of the replies), we are all descended from Mr. and Mrs. Noah as well.

Yes, it is impossible to prove either way.

However, to leave open the door to the possibility that humanity as we now know it could actually consist of humans-with-souls and humans-without-souls is a grave moral error. It is necessary that since “it is impossible to prove” that we agree to default to the morally safe position, which is that all humans have souls, and are made in the image and likeness of God.

Saying that we are descended from multiple parents, only 2 of whom had real souls, opens the can of worms.
Actually, I never even considered this possibility. It would seem to be that homo sapiens sapiens mated with homo sapiens, and that God provided the soul? If God did not provide the soul to even you and I, then we would just be mortal biological organisms. God provides the soul to every human person specifically. Maybe as Adam and Eve’s (the first modern or ‘true’ humans as Pius XII says) descendants mated with pre-modern humans, God infused these with souls as well, and pre-modern humans died out, which explains why we have none today, why we have a build up to an ultimate Great Leap Forward, and how we can fit Adam and Eve into a 1,000 person bottleneck?

Pre-modern humans would be in the same category as my cousin Chilly Chimp. 😉
Genesis 2: 18-24 clarifies the difference. “The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all the wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.” When God brought Eve to Adam, he said: “This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” In other words, Adam exclaimed: "Wow! She has the same human nature as me. This will be good…

Descendents, having inherited human nature from Adam and Eve, would do likewise.
As for incest, the conditions were not the same as in the time of Moses. Furthermore, God specifically blessed Adam and Eve saying: “Be fertile and multiply.” *Genesis 1:28 *

When one reads the actual research on the bottleneck theory, one finds assumptions, estimates, speculations all rolled into the experimental simulated population models used for predicting possibilities backwards thousands or millions of years. This sounds like a pretty good guess, but…

Human life is sacred.

Bear in mind that our earliest breeding pairs, starting with Adam and Eve, bred for hundreds of years. Consider that, if you follow the Genesis timeline, Adam was still alive when Noah’s dad was born.

The numbers wouldn’t be plausible today with limited breeding years per generation, but then?

Then, the first generations were pristine and prior to many of the ills of modern life.

Science has proved through mitochondrial DNA that all humans alive today came from one woman but it has not yet proved they came from one man. Mitochondrial DNA is only through the female line.

How do you know that God did not use evolution to “create” Adam and Eve?
As Pope Benedict recently stated: “Evolution is not a complete, scientifically proven theory.”

That’s where I stand.

No -MtDNA also can run through the male.

Adam and Eve are not the result of evolution. They are distinct and their lineage is distinct.
How do you know that God did not use evolution to “create” Adam and Eve?
What God used is not part of Catholic teaching. Catholic teaching is that Adam and Eve are distinct from all other lineages or species. This is because their human nature is spirit/matter, soul and body. Our spiritual soul cannot come from anything material. Because of this unique human nature, which only God could create, Adam and Eve became the one and only parents of humanity.

Catholic teaching regarding Adam and Eve is found in the
Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition, ISBN: 1-57455-109-4
Paragraphs 355-421.

The good news of Jesus Christ follows in Paragraph 422, etc.

One can put paragraph numbers and topics such as Adam, etc. in the Catechism’s search bar in link www.scborromeo.org/ccc.htm

Right. Which means the Church does not teach that God did or did not use evolution.

I have read that. My specific question concerns Adam and Eve being real people. Modern scientists seems to say that all humans descend from more than one couple. At face value, Pius XII says this is incorrect.
…are these the same scientists that stated that the missing link lived in Africa and that both apes and humanoids decended from her?, or are they more related to the ones that conceive the supper collider (three nations wide, over 10 billion dollars worth of equiptment) to demonstrate the “emergence” of life?

…my point is that Science is working on theories and premises and it presents its findings as factual and concrete though much of its argument is based on theory and hypothesis!

Here’s the tough one to swallow: aquatic single-celled creature (comes into existence after myriads of coincidences and just so conditions) morphs into everything from plant to animal and aquatic to ground dwelling and predactor to pray–no stretch of the imagination and no leap of faith required; yet, Adam and Eve, along with the universe, Created by an Omnipotent Beign… no way, how incomprehensible a thing!

Who is really punking you?

I don’t believe the hypothetical is possible. Science doesn’t either. Science is always open to correction.
…but does not always own up to its failures–theories just vanish into the sunset and statements just seem to fade with the obsolete tech (remember when scientists were sure that the universe was so old that it was folding upon itself? The Hubble came back with “nope” still expanding!)

So if I am understanding correctly, in said case all major and accepted scientific theories concerning the descent of the current human population are wrong, and to think otherwise is to contradict the Church?
No. The Church deals in theology (Faith based) while science deals in fact and much theorizing (fact contorted to support the latest theory/ies).

Again: Church - God based (the Omnipotent Creator) while science - fact and figures (no Creator; self-emergence).

Hello,
On the evolution vs. creation debate, I have heard a couple of points.

I’ve heard claim that as Catholics we are not required to believe in the literal Adam and Eve. We are, however, required to believe that all of humanity came from the Tigress/ Euphrates valley area.

As the Church believes, that everything that lives has a soul. What sets humanity apart from the rest of creation is we have souls that continue after death of the physical body. My belief is that there was a tribe of hominoids living where the Bible tells us. This tribe had souls which terminate at death. Then, two (2) individuals in this tribe were granted (by God) souls which continue after death. These two (2) were Adam and Eve.

In the realm of posibilities your theory has as much value as the next; yet, when mergin science and Faith you do have a problem: Faith does not accept a reinvented Adam and Eve!
