Hi all, I am an irish catholic.
I find it impossible to find friends who are devout, practicing, non compromising young catholics aged 26 - 32,

Any advice for this irish situation?

Isn’t Ireland a catholic country? Or is Ireland catholic but not religious

Yes almost everyone is a baptised catholic who goes to a catholic school, receives first communion, first confession, confirmation, marries in a catholic church, baptises their children in a catholic church, But maybe 40 to 50% of people (mainly those aged 13 -57) do not practice or believe in the catholic faith,

Church attendance is at 33%,

For example, since my time in elementary school, high school, college, i have not met one practicing devout catholic my own age, All lapsed catholics,

Also; most priests are age 50 plus. Parishes are left without priests when a priest retires, meaning neighbouring priests could have 6 churches to say mass in on a day

That is incredibly sad. 😥 We occasionally have an older Irish priest from a neighboring city come and preside for Mass and it’s always a treat. Ireland used to be a beacon of the faith, I’ve been told…but it seems to be more common everywhere that young people aren’t practicing their faith.

Pray for St Patrick’s intercession to rekindle the faith in Ireland. I’ve visited there beautiful country.

As a mostly Irish-American Catholic in an older age group, give it 10 or 20 years when they have had to deal with some difficult life situations and you will see some of them fumbling their way back to the Church like I did. I know that doesn’t help you right now though.

Hi, I am also an Irish practising Catholic in my 30’s. We sure are the minority in Ireland sadly but in saying that the young that do go to Mass are strong in their faith. We need to pray that the young people in Ireland will turn to God and His church, secularism has spread aswell as atheism in a country which is run by an anti-Catholic liberal government, media etc which does not help matters.

Ireland once was “The land of saints and scholars”
The problem is in my opinion celebrities are idolized almost in a godlike way. Beyonce is a perfect example of this. This idea that ‘the church needs to get with the times’ which I’ve seen many young people say on social media is wrong and they are so misinformed. Understanding the Catholic faith is a big issue as many are ignorant to it and listen to what they think the church is.

I recommend a website called. Meetup.com. You can organize a weekly Meetup from that site for Catholics from 25-35 to pray the rosary, read the Sundays Gospel readings and talk about it, and maybe go to a nice pub afterwards. I have a feeling many would show up. Try it out. Maybe ask a priest if the meeting could be in the Parish Center. Hope you try. Cheers. 🙂

For any Irish Catholics (I am not Irish myself) I would highly, highly recommend Roger Buck’s two books, “The Gentle Traditionalist” and “Cor Jesu Sacratissimum.”

I just found out recently that my great-great grandpa on my dad’s mother’s side came over from Ireland in the 1800s and settled in North Alabama.

So we’re still lucky here in the Philippines even though we don’t go to catholic school because dear lord its super expensive.

Ill pray for you God bless

I’m Irish but older than you, however I find IRE more ‘devout’ than any other country I have been to. I lived in Scotland, for 12 years, and religion is practically non-existent there, as compared to Dublin. My parish has 5 Sunday masses and they are all packed, with around 6 parishes to choose from, in my vicinity. So it’s all relative, I suppose.

However, I do agree with your sentiment, it is v difficult, if not impossible, to meet devout Catholics in day to day life, at jobs, socialising, etc.

Possibly, you could volunteer to help with an overseas pilgrimage, e.g. to Lourdes/Medjugorje, as many young people sign up to help with invalids/sick people that need assistance, and if from IRE you could meet up with them on your return.

Also, I note there are many young people assisting with the Prolife movement, at present, putting up posters, canvassing, etc… in relation to the 8th amendment referendum. I think offering to volunteer with a group, with a Catholic ethos, would be your best and speediest option.

(E.G. Prolife is currently crying out for volunteers, to canvass, etc… for the last 2 weeks of the campaign.)

As a side note, one of the older ladies at Saint Patrick’s - where I go to mass -
She has such a beautiful Irish brogue when reciting a rosary station.
I bought these great green rosary beads - she looked at them, but wasn’t impressed.
Seagull dropped his head down - lol
But she put a Irish blessing on them, at my request.

I recently gave them to a pot smoker named Patrick - 34
and he was born one day before Saint Paddy’s day.
Not sure if he believes, but has two kids, divorced, and recently in a car crash.
Told him to keep them in his new car -
He smiled and thanked me, which was nice.

I’m 15 and from the west so things aren’t as bad here and the church is always packed every Sunday. The situation is still kind of worrying though…

By the way, I’m 1/2 Irish. Grandmother’s side of mom.
Great music. Quality poetry. Love the sweaters.
I hope to visit there on a vacation, some day 😇
