Many saints were priests

Yes. Moreover, I know a few hundred other priests and would consider all of them to be holy.
 
is there some part of Catholic doctrine that expects priests to be holier than laity?
 
I think the answer to that is both priests and laity are called to be as holy as they can be. But since priests give their entire lives for God, we expect more from them.

I’ve heard it somewhere but I can’t remember where…either way, it would make sense.
 
I feel weird about judging priests but I know several that are incredibly inspiring and a select few that are not so much. Oddly, my favorite priest is one that I know is living in a state of sin. Funny how that works sometimes.

As to the prayer card posted above:
If a priest is mediocre, his people will be bad.

If a priest is bad, his people will be______?!? Yikes.
 
Our current shepherd is quite distant from the people. Indeed, you won’t find the smell of sheep on that one.
 
Sometimes I feel like my parish priest would like a natural disaster to occur in our parish, so the parish would be more motivated into action.
 
I can’t possibly imagine the wear and tear that must happen to a priest’s heart over the years. Without God’s grace, anyone would be crushed under the sheer weight of it.

I’m always so happy when I read how you pray for priests. It amazes me how often they’re forgotten, except when they fail. I really believe we have a duty to pray for them. They do so much for us, and more than we’ll ever know in secret. I’ll admit, I didn’t used to pray for them very much. Then one day I was talking to one of my parish priests and he told me he prays for me. I was so happy to hear that, but felt ashamed when I realized I couldn’t remember the last time I prayed for him. Now I pray for all priests daily and my parish priests by name, but I’m sorry that’s what it took to get me to start.

Btw, I think that prayer card is another thing I saved from one of your posts. If not you, then probably Tis_Bearself. I hope you don’t mind (you post a lot of good stuff)!
 
That is a wonderful idea! I think I’ll do the same. Please accept my sympathy for the loss of your brother.
 
My priest is from a country in Africa. He explained to us that in his country, a lot of seminarians enter the seminarian because it’s kind of like entering the army… you send troublemakers off to seminary to let God sort them out. 😛

Now, I also know that, back in his country, he was shot (in the head) for being a priest. And what’s more, his bishop told him to go visit his attacker in prison and go forgive him. And he did. He doesn’t talk about the bigger story, or really go into the details very much-- those are literally the only things I know about the situation-- but it happened to come up in a couple of sentences in the middle of a homily about forgiveness, and if you were asleep or thinking about football, you would have totally missed it.

So, yeah. I’d say we’ve got a pretty good priest. 🙂
 
I have great respect for my priest. He is holy in a priestly, fatherly way. I pray for him daily, that he faithfully and joyfully continues to serve us through his vocation. May God bless him and all the priests I have known and loved in Christ, Jesus.
