I found this map while playing online. Thought I’d share. There’s a few catholic counties in Mississippi which shocked me

I think it’s a bit disingenuous… I’m guessing “adherents” is based on people enrolled in a parish. For Catholics, that number is largely inflated and false as they don’t really adhere to the faith at all and left long ago. It took me 3 months, a phone call and 2 emails to get off the registry for one parish after I moved to another. Other religions keep much better track of who is and isn’t attending.

From what I hear, the Southern Baptists are going through bizarre “hostile takeover” by “New Calvinists”. There’s some infighting going on. They may not be the same in 10 years.

What’s “participating” is this the same as practicing?

In most US counties, self identified Catholics are a plurality. In most of the south, Baptists are a plurality. This is only because the Catholic Church is much larger than any of the many Protestant churches.

That’s the case. The major seminaries of the SBC are run by New Calvinists. Take-over seems inaccurate. It’s also a growing force in wider Evangelicalism. It’s also present in the Church of England’s Evangelical wing! Many of the best-selling books in Evangelicalism are from New Calvinists.
I think the growth is due to the fact they’re the only theological group that takes the time to explain their positions and it offers intellectual approaches that runs contrary to the stereotype of Evangelicalism being all emotions based. My perception is New Calvinists are systematic and organized and take things very seriously. It’s only a perception but they seem very well-versed in Scripture and the works of theologians of the past compared to other Evangelicals. Some in the laity are even familiar with the works of the Early Church Fathers, which can’t be said about many others.

Living in the South I do know a lot of Baptists, but there are plenty of people in a variety of other Protestant churches.

I think a lot of Yankees have moved to the Gulf Coast.

I believe the majority of the Catholics in the area come from our high Vietnamese and other Asian population. I may be wrong, but that is what I believe it is

There was also a migration of sorts from Louisiana to points east post-Katrina - and Louisana is historically Catholic, so that seemingly odd concentration doesn’t really surprise me much.

This map isn’t a real eye opener to me. And I don’t believe that other religions keep any better record of who’s attending than any other does. I never saw that growing up. (As an example I was still on the rolls for the Methodist church I was confirmed in in 1989 until the mid 2000s as an active member, even though I hadn’t attended a service there in about ten years.) I think this is as much by self-identification as it is by anything else - the map is from 2010, post-census, I’m sure, as most demographic maps of this nature seem to be. So this likely was drawn from census records and not church attendance records. I can’t say I ever saw someone taking roll as we walked in the sanctuary.

I think they may be from the old French influence too (like Louisiana). edit: I’m actually surprised how heavily Catholic the West coast is.

They already are.

And they’re bringing failed socialist policies with them. I would like the US to be as Catholic as the next person but these demographic shifts are going to be disastrous in the long run.

Well, I don’t socialism either, to be clear. But I do want abortion eliminated. Among other positive influences.

It’s too bad they don’t seem repulsed by socialism, like Cubans.

They aren’t voting for politicians that oppose abortion though.

They consistently vote for the party that has said pro-life candidates have no place in their party. Because that particular party openly supports illegal immigration.

Just a thought regarding the West Coast…Seattle is a self identified sanctuary city. So are LA and San Francisco.

It’s not the priests.

As the wife of a legal immigrant who worked to legally migrate her British spouse, I usually steer clear of these conversations. For while I’m for DACA, laws are laws, and ignoring them makes one equally criminal.

I’m the son of an immigrant myself (my mom is Thai), and I agree it’s a problem. She did everything by the book and loves the US. Not sure why others don’t (but admittedly, I’m ignorant on the whole process). That said, it would be nice if there were actually more Catholics in California…if you know what I mean.

I always enjoy looking at these maps.

I was surprised by the number of counties dominated by Mormanism.
