There’s a few catholic counties in Mississippi which shocked me
That’s the area around Mobile, which was a French Catholic settlement.

I think a lot of Yankees have moved to the Gulf Coast.
I think they may be from the old French influence too (like Louisiana). edit: I’m actually surprised how heavily Catholic the West coast is.
A big part of the West used to be part of New Spain & then Mexico… so it was heavenly evangelized by Franciscans. Hence, all the cities with Catholic names in the West.

But again, this map is just a plurality, not a majority. There are actually very few places in the US with a majority Catholic population.

I believe southern Mississippi has descendants of French colonists and Italian immigrants as well as newly arrived Vietnamese immigrants. It seems that the Protestant Bible Belt has a noticeable Catholic population along the gulf coast.
