I see that Mar Bawai Soro is now officially listed as an “official” of the Chaldean Eparchy in San Diego - but his “appointment” is shown to have been in this year. I assume he wasn’t officially listed as a bishop of the Catholic Church from 2008 through 2014 due to tense relations with the Assyrian Church?

What does the vague position “official” of the Eparchy entail?

Bishop Bawai Soro is currently accepted by Bishop Sarhad Jammo as defacto auxiliary, the Holy Synod will decide what Bishop Bawai’s official role will be later this year during the Synodal Assembly.

He’s been a Catholic Bishop since coming into communion. But he’s a bishop in an irregular status - he has no Catholic See (which is particularly abnormal - even auxiliary bishops normally have a titular see - usually a former cathedral of a diocese in abeyance).

And, as noted, until the Chaldean Synod decides his formal role, it’s up in the air. THey could, in theory, make him an auxiliary, retire him, make him ordinary of a personal prelature within the Chaldean Church, move him to a vacant see, make him coadjutor, or even leave him in his irregular status.

What they have or have not done is probably not a matter of appeasing the Assyrians. HG has simply been focusing on integrating his clergy and faithful into the Chaldean Church.

Mar Bawai does have a titular See, see below:
Pope Names Chaldean Leader Most Reverend Bawai Soro to Titular See of Foraziana

January 13, 2014
WASHINGTON—Pope Francis has named Most Reverend Bawai Soro to the titular see of Foraziana. He will continue to reside at the Chaldean Eparchy of St. Peter the Apostle in San Diego.

The appointment was publicized in Washington, January 11, by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, apostolic nuncio to the United States.

There are an estimated 60,000 Catholics in the Chaldean Eparchy of St. Peter the Apostle. The jurisdiction extends to all the Western states in the United States. Members include Catholics of the Chaldean or Assyrian rite, many of whom have immigrated to the United States from the Middle East, especially from Iraq and Iran.

Well then, the question of what the synod does with him is simpler still!

Vatican Radio stated (Jan 11, 2014) that: “The Pope also assigned the titular see of Foraziana to Mar Bawai Soro, in pastoral service in the Chaldean Eparchy of Saint Peter the Apostle of San Diego, CA, USA.”

The Catholic-Hierarchy.org page for Bishop Bawai Soro correctly indicates that he was ordained a bishop outside of the Catholic communion and “converted” in 2008. No problem there. Giga Catholic, on the other hand, flags his episcopal consecration with the RED notation “no papal mandate”. I find this highly offensive. Technically this is true, but it implies, to me, and to other readers who aren’t aware of the situation, that he was some sort of schismatic radical who went out and got ordained on his own “without mandate” from the Pope…rather than the reality that he was a bishop in good standing of an apostolic Church. I wrote to Giga Catholic about a week ago but didn’t receive a response. I am Latin, but this really, really bothers me.

I wonder why they did that for Mar Bawai, and not any others, for example,

Blessed Mar Ivanios Gevarghis, first Archbp of the Syro-Malankara Church:
gcatholic.org/dioceses/diocese/triv0.htm#3507

Mor Philexenos Paulos:
gcatholic.org/hierarchy/data/bishops-3.htm#3509

etc…
I imagine the webmaster is simply ignorant of Mar Bawai’s story. That is why I wrote to the site, but like I said, have not received a response. Perhaps if a couple more people send in the correction… I feel like that notation is an unintentional smear on the personal history of a bishop in good standing with the Catholic Church which needs to be addressed.
