I’m all in favor of free thinking, but the **essential **message in Christianity is non-violence. The whole premise of the Death Penalty is to “wipe out an undesirable” whether supporters accept it or not that is what is occurring. I find it rather ironic that supporters of abortion and supporters of the death penalty argue for their cause the exact same way. The way i’m referring to is: they see it as a benefit of society, a good is coming out of it. It’s a woman’s right or it’s the right of the citizens/victims. Hmmm it’s even more ironic that people argue that you can’t be Christian and pro-choice, but you can be Christian and pro-death penalty. Makes you wonder
Well put. 👍👍👍

How many pro-abortionists are anti-death penalty?

Look around. Many will say the state can’t condemn a person to death who was found guilty under the law but, the state has the right to kill the innocent when we kill our pre-born brothers and sisters.

53,000,000 dead since Roe v Wade.

Worried about the future of social security? Quit killing babies.

The sickest part about the whole thing is that, demographically, far more ‘future democrats’ are being killed than are ‘future republicans.’ The chief socioeconomic demographics for abortions are minorities and the poor, who make up the Democrat base. Liberals are so bent on advancing and protecting this genocide that they are willing to further it, even at their own political peril.

Thanks for discussing your Church’s view on this matter. My reply wasn’t directed towards a certain denomination, but rather to all the Christian faithful alike. The death penalty is immoral and so is other intrinsic evils **(**I’ll be waiting for an “over the top conservative” reply about how the death penalty isn’t an intrinsic evil 😉 )
I don’t believe that this is consistent with Catholic teaching.

The death penalty can save innocent lives just as war can. Intentionally killing the innocent is an intrinsic evil, but taking deadly action to save the lives of innocents is not evil. In fact, it is more evil to allow innocent people to be killed by an aggressor than to kill the aggressor.

I don’t see why anyone would want to be democrat or republican in the first place…its like choosing the lesser of two evils. All I know is that I follow God and the teachings of Christ. I don’t have time to deal with what the “government” says. Be wise choose Christian Anarchy 👍

I would have to agree with you your above post isn’t consistent with Catholic teaching. In the end no one should be killed…once you justify “legal” murder you should just call yourself pro-choice. 🙂 God Bless!

I wish I could have gone, but I did watch it on EWTN!! 🙂 I’ve got to go next year!!

Do you believe that all war is wrong?

The Lutheran position is neither in favor of capital punishment or against it. Our belief is that God has given the authority to the State to decide what to do with evildoers (hence my quote from our dear Lord Himself attesting to this.) In other words, if we are in a non-death penalty state, to carry out a death sentence would be a crime. Conversely, to give a child rapist and murderer the needle in Texas is not condemned by scripture nor by God.
Nominefili is only partially right. The Lutheran position is not so easy stated and is not so universal. The LCMS state that the death penalty is not contrary to scripture or the Lutheran Confessions.

The ELCA states in it’s social statement, “The state is responsible under God for the protection of its citizens and the maintenance of justice and public order. God entrusts the state with power to take human life when failure to do so constitutes a clear danger to society.
However, this does not mean that governments have an unlimited right to take life. Nor does it mean that governments must punish crime by death. We increasingly question whether the death penalty has been and can be administered justly.” The social statement goes on to say that the ELCA opposes the death penalty.

It is worth noting that, at least within the United States, all crimes for which the death penalty is proscribed are likewise ‘intrinsic evils.’
Except when they execute an innocent man. Ooops.

You’re right that is a shame. I wonder if the state puts to death more democrat or republicans?

Miriam I was thinking the EXACT THING the other day in class. I’m taking a health care economics class and we were talking about the coming crisis with social security. If we had 53 million more people in the U.S., the baby boomer generation retiring wouldn’t be nearly as devastating to S.S. Sadly, this is just another example of how decadent our society is becoming…

I wish we could get back to the March for Life topic.

In our diocese, one of the little small town parishes, one that we attend whenever we are spending time in this beautiful part of Northern Illinois, sent a bus with 50 of their parishioners to the March for Life.

We were at Mass at that parish last fall, and heard the impassioned plea of the young man who was in charge of organizing the chartered bus trip. Back then, they had already raised several thousand dollars so that people who couldn’t afford the fee but had the time would be able to go at no cost. Right before his speech (which took place AFTER Mass, BTW, in case anyone is getting ready to criticize), the young man announced that someone had handed him a large check, enough to pay for one person’s expenses, and told us that the donator had said that since he couldn’t go and march, he wanted someone else to be able to go.

So exciting! If you attended this little parish, you would probably think, “What a quaint, sleepy little parish. So many old people, so few young people. So many farmers. No movers and shakers here.”

But wrong! I’m guessing that if percentages are considered, they probably raised more money and sent more parishioners to the March than most of the large parishes in the diocese.

Here’s a link to their Facebook page: facebook.com/pages/OregonMt-Morris-to-March-for-Life-in-Washington-DC/125158127499944 There’s a nice picture of the group.
