March - Month of St. Joseph

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

St. Joseph has traditionally been honored during the Month of March – although we perhaps do not give him enough attention. He is often called the “forgotten” man, but like Mary our Mother, Joseph was specially chosen by God and is precious to the Lord, to Mary and to Jesus. If you have never read the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope St. John Paul II “On the Person and Mission of St. Joseph in the Life of Christ and of the Church” – you may want to read it during this Month: see HERE

Dear Petra and Catholic Fireman,

Thank you both for your replies. I had not forgotten, but simply didn’t have an opportunity to post anything on St. Joseph until yesterday.

When I became President of our parish’s Legion of Mary Praesidium, I began to pray especially to St. Joseph every day to help me love Jesus and Mary more and to serve in Mary’s Legion in a way that would honor them. I figured no other human person knew and loved Jesus and Mary more than St. Joseph and he would help me. He did. I completed my 6 year term at the end of February. I thank the dear Protector and Guardian of Jesus and Mary and continue to offer this prayer to him daily:

St. Joseph - Man of Unshakable Hope - Oratory of St. Joseph - Montreal, Canada

Powerful St. Joseph, in the course of your life you shone forth as a man of hope. In the midst of trials and difficulties, such as the distressing circumstances of Jesus’ birth, the flight into Egypt, and exile in a foreign land, your only strength sprang from your unshakeable hope in the goodness, the power, and the fidelity of God.

Trustingly, I look to you today. Because you are so close to God, you are in a position to join your prayers with mine. Beg your Son to sustain me in the trials that confront me at this time. Help me to overcome my sorrows by giving me the same strength that allowed you to carry on in the midst of difficulties. May the guiding light of hope lead me through my trials to the comforting presence of the Father. Amen.

• One may just wish to note that the Feast of St. Joseph is celebrated on* March 20th* this year because March 19th falls on a Sunday.

However,St.Joseph’s Oratory here in Montreal , being the largest shrine to St.Joseph in the world, has special permission to celebrate his feast on Sunday the 19th of March , while all the surrounding parishes celebrate St.Joseph’s feast on Monday March 20th this year.

It happened previously where I attended a Mass in honour of St Joseph at the Oratory on one of those occasions where March 19th fell on a Sunday, and then attended another Mass in honour of St. Joseph in my home parish the very next day Monday March 20th . . . a little unusual perhaps, but quite cool .

Yes, there are certain “permissions” granted for Masses to be celebrated on Sundays, that are very special to certain shrines and parishes, so I’m happy that you were able to have a “double share” in honor paid to St. Joseph – dear Husband of Mary, and Guradian of the Child Jesus and who reigns in heaven as Protector now of God’s Holy Church.

St. Joseph, pray for us, that we may be more devoted to Jesus and Mary as you were on this earth.

But even those who started the novena to St. Joseph on the 10th of March , would still be praying it in sync with how St Joseph’s Oratory is praying it this year: Since they still celebrate his Feast on the 19th , they still start it on the 10th.

I guess two rights don’t make a wrong.

It’s as if we were allowed a wider margin this year - sort of a 10-day novena , if you will (all you math teachers and linguists, block your -]ears/-] , eyes ,on that last one. uch

Thank you for putting into words something which I wasn’t able to for all these years : “double share.” .

A simple prayer which St. André Bessette - the founder of St. Joseph’s Oratory, (who only passed away in January of 1937 ) frequently recommended to those who sought his counsel:

"Saint Joseph pray for me as you yourself would have prayed had you been here on earth, in my shoes, with my troubles."
