Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Was anyone else deeply moved by Archbishop Sample’s Letter, which I posted on another thread a few days ago? I was so blessed by it, I sent the link to both my pastor and my Bishop. Since we usually celebrate a First Saturday Mass each month, I’m hoping this year, Sept. 6 might be a special “Marian” Day in our parish.
Our Legion of Mary members usually gather for First Saturday Mass and a “get together” in our parish social hall to celebrate two birthdays in September: Mary’s Nativity on Sept. 8 and the “birth” of the Legion on the vigil of that Feast on Sept. 7, 1921. We decided to invite the whole parish to celebrate with us and are getting ready to follow up on our “Save the Date” announcement in the parish bulletin with a formal invitation. Please pray that many hearts will be moved to honor Jesus through Mary on that day.

His words sounded so much like contemporary America, it was hard to believe they were dated 1862 in the Preface to his translation of St. Louis de Montfort’s True Devotion Thank God for clergy devoted to Mary, such as our recent Popes and this letter from the Archbishop of Portland Oregon. Archbishop Sample’s Letter was inspired by Pope Francis’ celebration of a Marian Day in Rome on the First Saturday of last September toward the close of the Year of Faith.…Here in England, Mary is not half enough preached. Devotion to her is low and thin and poor. It is frightened out of its wits by the sneers of heresy. It is always invoking human respect and carnal prudence, wishing to make Mary so little of a Mary that Protestants may feel at ease about her. Its ignorance of theology makes it unsubstantial and unworthy. It is not the prominent characteristic of our religion which it ought to be. It has no faith in itself. Hence it is that Jesus is not loved, that heretics are not converted, that the Church is not exalted; that souls which might be saints whither and dwindle; that the Sacraments are not rightly frequented, or souls enthusiastically evangelized.
Jesus is obscured because Mary is kept in the background. Thousands of souls perish because Mary is withheld from them…
