I was wondering if anyone could recommend ways to develop a devotion to Mary? Are there any books you would recommend to be read that would help?

St. Louis de Montfort’s The True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin is very good. St. Alphonsus has also wrote The Glories of Mary but I haven’t read it yet. You could also pray the rosary and say the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin. Good copies of the Little Office and True Devotion are available at Baronius Press while I think TAN books will have St. Alphonsus’ book.

St. Louis de Montfort’s True Devotion to Mary was a favorite of Pope St. John Paul II. I don’t have it yet, but I want to do the retreat in 33 Days to Morning Glory. Both are available on Amazon.

I’m eager to hear others’ recommendations! Thanks for posting this great question.

Scott Hahn’s “Hail Holy Queen!” is a great work and digestible for a contemporary audience. He has a talent for keeping his books light while at the same time very meticulous to Church teaching & tradition. St Alphonsus Liguori is my favorite old school author thus far and I’ll read anything he writes. His book, likewise titled “Hail Holy Queen!” (what Dr Hahn titled his book after) was enjoyable for me because I just love how dense & rich his writing is. It is also very wordy and he very, very heavily makes use of redundancy in order to drive his points home. He draws & quotes from dozens of different saints & scholars of his time in order to show how they are all essentially saying the same thing. It’s a slower book to read.

This is all academic though. Books will give you a better understanding of her vocation and how it relates to you, but you deepen devotion to Mary the exact same way that you deepen any relationship in the world. You spend time with her.

Both are excellent.

‘The Glories of Mary’ is a must. Garrigou-Lagrange’s ‘The Mother of Our Saviour’ is another classic (I haven’t finished it, however), as is ‘The World’s First Love’ by Fulton Sheen.

Excellent answer. Yes.
Simply pray and talk with Our Lady.
She’s our mother too, you know! 👍

Yes, True Devotion, Secret of the Rosary, World’s First Love, The Glories of Mary, Agreda’s City of God.

Thank you everyone. I actually own “Secret of the Rosary” and have started it.

i would absolutely start with “The Question of Mary” by Fr Rene Laurentin. In my experience, this book provides the best foundation for developing a sound and rightly ordered Marian devotion.

i would follow that up with seeking out writing of Blessed John Henry Newman on Mary.

I have always used the “Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary” along with the daily Rosary.

The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary can be found here in various languages, including Latin.

A good devotion to Our Lady is to wear the Miraculous Medal and the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Even better, one may use the Four Way Medal and the Fivefold Scapular. Always recite the Magnificat as a post-Communion prayer and light a candle at Her statue if your church has one.
