Subsequent to the article in Newsweek, and the denial by the Vatican spokesman, in the September 24th, 1997 Vatican Information Services (VIS) press release, Pope John Paul is quoted as saying the following at his general audience in Vatican Square (emphasis is mine):
The heavenly Father has wished to unite “to the priestly intercession of the Redeemer the maternal intercession of the Virgin. It is a function that she exercises to the benefit of those who are in danger and need temporal favors, and above all, eternal salvation.”
The titles with which the Christian people addresses the Mother of the Lord “help in understanding better the nature of her intervention in the life of the Church and of each of the faithful.”
As “‘Advocate,’ she defends her children and protects them from the damage caused by their own faults. Christians invoke Mary as ‘Help of Christians,’ recognizing her motherly love that sees the needs of her children, and that she is prepared to intervene to help them, especially when eternal salvation is at stake.”
She receives the title of “Helper” because “she is near all those who suffer or find themselves in situations of grave danger.” Finally, “as maternal Mediator, Mary presents Christ with our wishes, our supplications and transmit to us our divine gifts, interceding continually in our favor.”
Also, according to VIS, at his October 1st general audience held in St. Peter’s Square, Pope John Paul II " … recalled that Vatican Council II gave Mary the title of “Mediatrix,” affirming that “with her multiple intercession she continues to obtain for us the gifts of eternal salvation.” He is also quoted as saying:
“Despite the fact that some council fathers did not fully (agree with)” the attribution of this title to Mary, “it was nonetheless included in the dogmatic constitution on the Church to confirm the value of the truth that it expresses. However, they avoided joining it to any particular theology of mediation, and it was only included among the other titles recognized as Mary’s.”
“In proclaiming Christ the one mediator, the text of the Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy excludes any parallel mediation, but not a subordinate mediation. … It is possible to participate in Christ’s mediation in different spheres of the work of salvation. … In this will to stir participation in the unique mediation of Christ, the free love of God, who wants to share what he possesses, is manifested.”
Pope John Paul II is quoted in the 27 May 1998 edition of L’OSSERVATORE ROMANO as saying the following during the previous Sunday’s mass held in Turin, Italy:
Mary is our Mother and a true help for every Christian. …
Trusting in her motherly love, we now ask her to intercede for us, for our families, for the sick and the suffering, for the Church and for the city of Turin, for Italy and for the whole world. …
With her help, may the plan of divine salvation be fulfilled in each one of us, …
The Priest, Pastor and Leader of the Parish Community by Pope John Paul II, 25 March 2001, online a the Vatican:
- In the Church, the priest, alter Christus [another Christ], is the minister of the essential salvific actions. … With Mary, Mother of the Eternal High Priest, the priest is aware that, with her, he is “an instrument of salvific communication between God and man”, …
c). The specific journey to holiness
13. … the Blessed Virgin Mary, united with the Redeemer, comes to our assistance because ‘‘when we celebrate the Holy Mass, the Mother of the Son of God is in our midst and introduces us to the mystery of His redemptive sacrifice. Thus, she is the mediatrix of all the grace flowing from this sacrifice to the Church and to all the faithful.’’
While not ex-cathedra declarations in themselves, these clearly show that Pope John Paul II presents Mary as a Co-redemptrix or Mediatrix who allegedly assists in everyone’s salvation.
