Does anyone on the forums have a weird connection to Mary that can be hard to find when praying to Jesus? I sometimes pray to our Mother for help, but during those times I never feel that good of a connection to Jesus. I ask Jesus to help me not put Mary above Him, but I feel like I can use that love to bring me closer to Jesus by waiting.

A Jesuit Priest once told me to pray to Mary for help in becoming closer to Jesus.

You can never love Mary more than Jesus does.
I wouldn’t worry about it as long as you’re making sure to always worship Jesus and not worship Mary.
You should ask Jesus and Mary instead to please bring you closer to Jesus. No need to ask Jesus to “help you not put Mary above him”.

I think it is a natural thing to feel very close to Mary due to her humanity and her being our Mother. It reminds of a Motherly love to a child. But, @GiftofMercy response is an accurate one. When praying to Mary and praying the Rosary, our intention needs to be getting closer to Jesus. If our intentions change, then maybe a change in our prayers needs to happen. But its not wrong to feel extremely close to Mary. I love Mary and Her Blessed Rosary!

Think of Mary as your spiritual mother, leading you, a child, by the hand, to Jesus.

Here’s something to think about: The Jesus that Mary loves, believes in, is obedient to, is the one true Jesus Christ, Son of God. This is the Jesus - the only true Jesus - that true Marian devotion will lead you to.

Authentic Marian devotion will not lead you to a false Jesus - BUT the “Jesus” that we might lead ourselves to, could well be a false Jesus, in fact an idol of our own creation. We do not know Jesus as Mary does. We can mislead ourselves. Mary cannot , and will not.

I can’t think of a single Marian prayer that does not mention Jesus or Our Father in Heaven.

Personal prayer to Mary could fail to I suppose.

I experience Jesus differently when I pray the Rosary. It is like looking through a filter. I use the Rosary to prepare for receiving the Eucharist.
I can never get enough of praying the Rosary.

You may be thinking (especially if you or anyone in your family comes from a Protestant Pentecostal background, e.g. Assemblies of God) that your feelings are directly related to the success of your prayer life.

Feelings (consolations) are not the essence of prayer. Union with the Divine Will is. Sanctity is nothing other than conforming your will to God’s Will. Everyone has times of dryness in prayer. So don’t use your feelings as a barometer of your prayer life. Otherwise you may be tempted to give up or not go in the direction God wants to lead you.

That brings us to Mary. She is perfectly united to God’s Will; by Her Immaculate Conception and the Incarnation of Christ, She is the Spouse of the Holy Spirit. Since the Holy Spirit works through people, Mary is first and foremost the living Temple of the Spirit. St. Maximilian Kolbe described Mary as the quasi-incarnation of the Holy Spirit. That’s how closely united They are, such that (as spouses are supposed to be) Mary and the Holy Spirit are essentially not separate.

Bottom line: to say that “I’m afraid of getting too close to Mary” is to say “I’m afraid of getting too close to the Holy Spirit.” The devil wants you to think that. Don’t buy it.

What helps me is knowing she offers up to her Son, all the love and prayers I give her.
Personally, I don’t think I spend enough time in personal prayers, adoration etc as am always hurrying to go do something else.
I believe she keeps these intentions/ prayers burning before her Son, even after my often hasty prayers. (John 2:3).
