It’s a very bad idea to take quotes like this out of the greater context in which they were written, especially this first one. St. Louis Marie de Montfort explains elsewhere in the same book precisely what he means by such phrases. To do him and the concept justice you really do have to read the whole treatise.

However, to put it simply, the Saint means that God put himself at the disposal of one of his creatures because she was unique, the creation of his own hand and heart as the Mother of his Son, and uniquely obedient to him and to his will. Therefore, he will do whatever Mary wants because her will is entirely entwined with God’s will in all things. It is Paul’s assertion that we will rule with Christ taken to it’s logical end with regard to the greatest saint of them all–the Virgin Mary.

While there may be similarities in the concept of a female divinity and Mary, it is only a similarity of type and not of kind. Catholicism doesn’t see Mary as in any way a goddess. It does see her as it sees all the saints in heaven–as glorified persons partaking of the beatific vision, bathed in the eternal light of God himself. God always intended the human race to be glorified with him because he loves what he has created in his own image.

Our Lady’s “power” is not really her own but only comes through Our Lord. Her will, as another wrote, is totally docile and in union with the will of God. But just as we read in Scripture how she advocated at the weddding feast of Cana, as her requests for the sake of souls are placed before God, He especially hears those requests. But nothing comes that is outside of the will of God!

Our Lady is mediatrix of grace. This did not need to be so but was deigned by God to be so. Certainly He had no need of a human accomplice to redeem mankind, yet He choose to come to us through Mary, the Immaculate Conception.

I know many worry about too much honor or love given to Mary. But we can never outdo her Son in honoring her!

The first time one reads True Devotion, there may be some head shaking. But when it is picked up in later years, after more time seriously pursuing the spiritual life, it all of a sudden makes total sense.

I am consecrated to Jesus through Mary. It has changed everything! To belong to Our Lady is to know that nothing of what I am or have or do is ever wasted but presented to her Son by her own Immaculate hands. Coming from this sinner is one thing and coming from the Queen Mother is another. My deeds are tainted with pride and self love and my own sinful nature but Our Lady ‘dusts’ them off, so to speak, and then they come to Jesus in sparkling condition. It gives so much peace to know this.

I think Our Lord about gave up on my hard heart so some 12 or so years ago, He sent His Mother to round me up. And so she did. I will gladly spend all eternity thanking her! And she brought me to know Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and there I fell in love and so I have remained for about 11 years. It was at Our Lady’s hands that my soul was ed from the brink of hell for this mortal sinner was not headed to heaven.

Do not fear Our Lady! Her mission until the end of time is to bring souls to Jesus.

I only wrote that Our Lord “gave up” on me in a sense because I was so impervious to His church. I was a liberal, cafeteria, feminist “Catholic” and since I had so many years since confession, my conscience had a hard hard shell. So like in Scripture where the plant is given extra care, so was my soul when I became interested in Our Lady. And her gentle ways broke through the shell of my soul and she led me back into the fullness of faith and to the sacramental life.

You make it seem that God has become the docile one.

Likewise this idea of God’s will entwined with that of a creature, a hard concept to reconcile with standard Christian theology. They do not share one will, they cannot act as one regardless of her intention. She cannot contain the Will of God, nor can she equal it, or match it, or entwine with it.

Mary cannot be perfect, she can only strive for this, as we all do. She is the ‘most’ perfected of all human creatures to be sure. Should she submit her own will totally to God’s, then it is not her will but God’s, not her design but God’s, not her intent but God’s.

I suggest that people consecrate themselves to Jesus as Mary has done, not through Mary. This would be acceptable Orthodox teaching. Saint Louis DeMontfort skirts dangerously close to the edge in his enthusiasm and he quite clearly was careless in his choice of words.

Ave Maria!

Saints such as St. Bernard and St. Bonaventure (doctors of the Church by the way) have said that about Mary one cannot say too much (in favor of her)!. And I am a devotee of St. Maximilian Kolbe who took the works of St. Louis de Montfort even farther.
I belong to a religious order with a Marian Vow and it is so incredible beautiful! St. Louis, by the way, is being considered to be named a Doctor of the Church. And then there was our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II with his motto for his pontificate being “Totus Tuus” which is to say, “I am ALL YOURS, MARY”!
He was a big proponent of the St. Louis de Montfort consecration.
Mother Teresa spoke of loving Jesus with the heart of Mary. She said that we cannot love Our Lady too much for we will never love her more than Jesus did. Jesus gave the greatest possible glory to God in all the moments of His life on earth; He spent 30 of His 33 years with Our Lady. So why should I not emulate HIm?

I am ALL Yours, dear Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mother Mary!
