Marian Statue Restoration

My family is paying for the restoration of a beautiful statue of Mary. We believe it might be over 80 yrs old. The structural damage has been repaired and the artist wants my directions for repainting. Since I am pretty sure the statue is going into a darker place in the church I was thinking maybe it should be painted with all white robes, and some nice gold trim with a bit of stenciling.

Anyone have any info on how statues should be painted? Anyone know what this statue of Mary represents? I posted pics in my album section.

It appears to be " Our Lady Of Mt. Carmel". I will get back to you later when the Expert on Marian statues return"s home!

It’s Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth, holding the Infant Jesus, crushing the head of the serpent. Reference Genesis 3:15, where Eve (the Old Woman) is an image of Mary (the New Woman). A lot of images will have Mary crushing the head of the serpent. Run a Google image search for “Our Lady of Grace”, “Immaculate Conception”, “Our Lady of Victory” and so on.

I don’t think it’s of Mary under a particular title or patronage, but it uses imagery common to western statuary and iconography.
 
I haven’t any helpful information unfortunately, but I do have to say that that is one lovely statue and it is a wonderful thing that your family and you are doing. Bless you.

She did not specify the title only that it was not Our Lady of Mt Carmel.

If it were up to me to decide, I’d keep the same color scheme. Its rather traditional which I find great.

we had one of our Marian statues re-done but the painter used a light green for Mary’s robe. Its OK but I like the blue better
 
I would recommend that you keep it as close to the original as you can, especially when you have such a beautiful statue like the one you have. It looks like a Daprato but I am not sure of the title of your statue. Just type “Our Lady statue” in google search, then click images. Maybe that will help you to find one similar. Be prepared that it is not always easy to get an exact match because they just don’t make those colors anymore.
 
To me it looks like Our Lady of Mt. Carmel too. If you put a scapular in the Infant’s hand…

My wife mentioned the downturned hand without the scapular, and the treading on the snake as the reason she doesn’t think this is Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.

I didn’t think it was Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. I have not been able to find another like it. It appears to me to be a combination of two styles, Mary, Queen of Heaven and Mary the Immaculate Conception.

It is a beautiful statue and since we are renovating our Church I want her painted to fit in with the new traditional look.
 
just thought I’d post a quick update on the statue my family is having restored. The restoration artist says it’s not a Daprato. She contacted the company and they said it was not one of theirs. She has not been able to find another like it. She now feels it may be older than the 80 or 100 years we first thought.
 
vsedriver…In the Holy lands a church was built for her by the CARMELITES.
She was called by them ,The Lady of the place. They loved Mary for being the
closest to Jesus. All of her pictures show many colors to her rope. Go for it.
its the artists call most times,unless its spelled out in Bible. Hope that helps
