I have been at college for about a month now, and people smoking marijuana seems fairly common around here. Am I morally required to report people when I see them doing this?

I would think in a case like that, no. My reasoning is that to report someone, you’d expect something to be done about it. In my experience in college long, long ago…it was somewhat common, and even if it was reported to whomever, they’d ignore it.

The only reason I could see doing it is if it was in an area where any smoking was prohibited, such as a dorm, where fire could be of concern.

Sort of like when you’d see someone speeding in a car…

I dont think so , there will be a constant uproar there if U do, I dont think smoking it is sinful. Some of the college staff smoke themselves too, I would leave it alone as long as U dont do it. I dont think its the worse thing they can do, unless it takes them over. There has been drink & drugs at colleges for quite a while. Thats why some students wont live on campus, cause they want to remove themselves from all that

That wouldn’t be very humble or meek now would it? 😛

Worry about yourself, let them do what they’re doing as long as it isn’t directly effecting you (or really immoral obviously).

The law against smoking pot may very well be imprudent, impractical, etc. but it is a legitimate law issued by a legitimate authority. As my Baltmore Catechism says: “All authority comes from God.” Deliberately disobeying a legitimate law is wrong.

that would be unwise. on the other hand, I’d drop the dime on a dealer.

I don’t think you are morally required to report everyone. These people made their own choices and its not your responsibility to stop them. If you have a chance to give your opinion though, I would let them know that what they are doing is wrong and harmful to their minds and bodies.

Ask yourself what sort of town or community you want?

If you want a community of stoners, drug dealers and the associated property crimes then do not report.

If you want a better, more wholesome and peaceful community for your family and friends then make a report.

If this is the first time in your life you are taking a stand then it will take courage. I am incredilbly protective of my community and have no problem trying to protect it from degradation.

Again it is a matter of asking yourself a simple question.

God bless

It is not wise to base our reasons on how our actions will be received by the masses. I wouldn’t care less if there were an uproar, right is right, and wrong is wrong. No man can change that. Trying to keep status quo is not always the correct path, even though it is often the easiest.

I say this with all due respect:

Mind your own business. It doesn’t affect your life and it would be far better for you to try and encourage them to stop smoking. Yes, it is our duty to admonish the sinner, but I think this refers to other Catholics, and not those who have totally different moral codes than us.

I may be unpopular for saying this but nobody likes a rat, or a grass. This may sound immature but it is a reality. Reporting these individuals will only bring you trouble and you will not be thanked for it. If somebody does something that really affects others, then you would have an obligation to report them. However, the people who smoke pot are really only hurting themselves. Reporting them will not solve the problem; in fact, you may even make it worse.

The best thing you can do in this situation is ignore this behaviour. If it really bothers you then you should have a private word with them. Do not report them. You do not need to go around making enemies for no reason.

I suspect that the police wouldn’t really care that much about users smoking pot. If you really want to help, you could find out who the dealer is and go to the police with that information. I think the police are too busy to bother with individuals smoking pot. It would be kind of like phoning the police to report that someone just passed you driving too fast. They don’t have time to deal with that.

But then, I live in Canada, maybe they’re stricter about pot where you are.

p.s. also we need to keep things in perspective, any drug, including alcohol is harmful when abused, but the effects of marijuana really aren’t any worse than alcohol. I don’t think you have to worry about a casual marijuana smoker going crazy and killing or robbing you.

If you want to speak the about if a country is legitimate then you won’t go far before someone will demonstrate how countries that had revolutions with certain characteristics are in a way illegitimate before God.

I obey a law based on whether it is morally required of me.

But to answer, technically yes, but since it will do no good but actually be detrimental to you ( you will get your payback if you did) then no.

It is like voting. Under normal circumstances it is a moral obligation. But between voting between one monster and another, that is certainly dispensed.

What I meant by uproar is that his safety & well being could be at risk. Some of them college students are brutal, & there is a goodly number of them who smoke weed & Drink heavily. Some of the staff even smoke weed, he better leave it alone:)It isn`t about to stop

I’ve got to agree. all it takes is one of them to be a rough customer and the OP might be buying a world of hurt. still, I might rat out a dealer, depending.

PetezaHut,

It is the business of anyone living in the community what the standards will be. It is also his business or that of his parents (depending on who is paying tuition). College costs big bucks in today’s world. If I am paying that much money I would want a good learning enviroment.

At one time it was unpopular to be Christian. I don’t think Peter was too worried about his popularity when he was being crucified. He worried about preaching the gospel of Jesus.

A more current example would be that of St. Maximilian Kolbe.

In my job as a lifeguard I work with many H.S. kids and college students. Many have the attitude expressed in the above quote. When parents see me enforce the rules I am routinely thanked. Why? Because they then have confidence their children will have a safe fun visit to the pool. Parents are very protective of their children and if they think you are not acting in their best interest they will take their $$ elsewhere.

Also, the example you set is important. Sometimes you never know how you affect someone watching. That is why it is important to behave with decency and morality. For example, one day during a swim a boy was bullying another boy. I enforced the rules and put a stop to the bullying. Every 15 minutes the lifeguards rotate to a new guard station. When it came time to rotate I went to the next station. When I got up in the chair and looked down guess whom I saw? The boy who had been the target of the bully was there. He felt secure being in my zone.

Please let me know what you decide?

May God bless you.

It was your job, this is not his job, trust me U & I know pot is throughtout society.
College kids want to party not all of them tho, some are there to get educated but a whole lot of partying goes on as they pay others to do their term papers. I Live in a College town, them college kids have no respect most of them they wreck the dorms & those who live off campus disturb the peace all the time. You would think that people who attend college would have better sense He needs to attend college & never mind them college animals. They have security on campus, even they cant stop it

You’re the lifeguard, though. It’s your job to enforce the rules.

If you were just showing up at swimming pools where you were not employed, and barking orders at people, it would probably not be welcomed, and you would be as likely to be charged with trespassing as thanked.

Pete is not employed as a police officer, nor is he the dorm mother. He is not bound by any law to report people for smoking marijuana.

He shouldn’t smoke it himself, of course, and he should probably avoid associating with those who use it, but he isn’t required to rat them out. Besides, the police are already aware that college kids smoke pot. No doubt they even know who the dealer is. They have their reasons for not cracking down on it and arresting them all.

I’m currently in my junior year at university, and at this point it is blatantly obvious that there is nothing that can be done to combat this problem. You could call the police on a group of these stoners, but what would it accomplish? Those kids will keep smoking after they get their ticket and slap on a wrist (that’s the penalty in Canada, anyway). Not to mention that marijuana is so accessible and widespread that any attempt would be futile.

Unfortunately, I tend not to make the best friends. Pot has become a constant problem with me, sadly I’ve had a lot of experience with it. Pot is so accessible, that there exists delivery companies. They operate like pizza delivery service, you call, you order, they show up in 30mins. And what’s worse, I got this number from the university through the student run “nightline” - which is supposedly a sort of university kid help line.

If anything, just pray - they really do need your prayers, breaking marijuana addiction is difficult and the addiction easily takes hold. Many are under the impression that since Marijuana does not have a physical addiction, that they cannot become addicted. This is one of the greatest lies on campus. Potheads are sick, and they need God’s grace and mercy.

its no big deal its weed let them do what they want and just dont mind it if you have a problem with it just deal with it
