Think Ozzie Osbourne. He’s pretty much the same type of entertainer but I don’t think he’s bitten of a live birds head yet like Ozzie did if anyone remembers. Ok I just dated myself :D. Marilyn is fairly harmless he’s more about showmanship sort of like KISS meets Madonna, meets Ozzie. His shows tend toward the dark side of all that. I’m not sure on the sexual end I’ve never seen him do anything but then again I only like a few of his songs.

You didn’t just date yourself you clearly just showed quite a bit of ignorance towards metal/rock in general.

Ozzy Osbourne has been accused of being a Satanist but firmly denies this. The biting off the head thing was a stupid mistake made while intoxicated and has been a running joke in his career.

Marilyn Manson on the other hand is an admitted follower of Satan yet you refer to him as “fairly harmless” sounds to me like justification for you enjoying some of his stuff.

I still think the later may very well be for publicity but either way you should probably educate yourself on things like this before making such claims.

Mom, don’t be too crazy with your “forbidden artist” stuff… Firstly, how old is your daughter?
If she’s young, then yes, I’d go ahead and keep at eye on what she listens to… If she’s older, just talk to her. Just because she listens to some of his work doesn’t mean she’s believing whatever he believes. As long as she has a good, adjusted, head on her shoulders it could be just fine.

Popping up and banning something because it’s ‘bad’ isn’t going to over too smoothly. While it is your right as a parent, as long as she’s living with you, it’s still again idea to approach things civilly, and not upset her. Saying something is totally off limits will often times just make your kid rebel. And if she’s a teenager? Well, rebellions already a natural thing.

And here’s the deal with Marilyn Manson. He says he is a satanist. And he relies heavily on shock value. And a lot of his music is just kinda… bad.
Overall, he’s just out for as much attention as he can get, really.

That being said, I have a few of his songs on my ipod. Not all of it is absolutely horrible. A lot of his music I just don’t like, but there are a few songs I appreciate. I think it’s more important to keep the content of individual songs in mind, than it is to “ban” an artist all together.
if your daughter has suddenly become interested in music of this type and the culture that surrounds it you need to find out why
The reason why could simply be she heard a song of his, and liked it.
And that probably IS the reason. Nothing more, nothing less. 🙂

My advice to OP: Just ask your kid how they FEEL about his music. How much of it they like, etc. Do they like a few songs? Do they actually like Marilyn Manson in general?

Talk to them if you’re concerned. Don’t just come up to them and say “No, you’re not allowed to listen to that”

I can’t believe people are defending this monster. Let me leave a few quotes here
Since its founding, LaVey’s Church of Satan attracted many varied people who shared an alienation from conventional religions, including such celebrities as Jayne Mansfield and Sammy Davis Jr., as well as rock stars King Diamond and** Marilyn Manson, **
who all became, at least for a time, card-carrying members. He numbered among his associates Robert Fuest, director of the Vincent Price “Dr. Phibes” films as well as The Devil’s Rain; Jacques Vallee, ufologist and computer scientist, who was used as the basis for the character Lacombe, played by Francois Truffaut in Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind; and Aime Michel known as a spelunker and publisher of Morning of the Magicians. -Taken from churchofsatan’s website.

Let’s see what a Member of the Church of Satan says about Manson.
DS: Marilyn Manson is a member?
Code:
PG: Yes, he’s a member who has been given an honorary priesthood. When asked about what Satanism is he can be very articulate in explaining it. But his own music is his own art. His stage shows are his own, and they don’t really exemplify Satanism in particular.
DS: Is he an active member?
Code:
PG: He’s an honorary priest, but he does his own thing.-Taken from: *Wikinews interview*
Alright.

So let’s get this straight, 1. He’s an active member of the Church of satan. 2. He’s an honourary Priest. If you shun him now, wait til you see this, ever heard Satan can use music to influence the youth? Well, Mr Manson confirms it.
“Music is the strongest form of magic.”
― Marilyn Manson,
And if that wasn’t bad enough, here’s what he says about Christianity.
“Hopefully, I’ll be remembered as the person who brought an end to Christianity.”
― Marilyn Manson Taken from: Goodreads.com, Marylin Manson quotes
Does this get any worse?

Keep this creep away from your Children. And, catholics, if you see his albums in your children’s bedroom, I want you to douce it with Holy Water and light it on fire.

EDIT: Sorry, I got my threads confused. I thought your post was responding to what I said in this other thread.

I would encourage you to re-read my post. I am not defending Marylin Manson. Frankly, I don’t pay much attention to him at all. I’ve never been a fan of his music.

I am curious as to why you ascribe so much spiritual power to him. He’s a shock artist. He dresses up in shocking outfits and says shocking things in order to sell records. Let’s not give him power that he does not have. That’s exactly why artists choose to go the shock route. People get worked up over it and mistakenly believe the music is more powerful and/or influential than it really is.

Actor Eric Szmanda once appeared in a Marilyn Mason video. For those CAF members who don’t know, Mr. Szmanda plays Greg Sanders on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

Tells me he is entirely unoriginal and way too old to be cool
Brian Warner is nothing but a cut rate Alice Cooper. His act has been done many times before in the history of rock music. He’s just a modern version of it. Everything he says and everything he does is done with the end goal of making money! Nothing more! He’s a former high school geek with a substance abuse problem.

Is the version of Marilyn Manson’s “(s)AINT” video that’s available for viewing on YouTube via MarilynMansonVEVO pornographic?

I don’t really care to find out. 😛 I’ll just assume it’s something I can live a happy life without ever having seen. 🙂

Music is just that, music. restricting music is like trapping your daughters mind and not lettingit develop it’s own ideas (in a safe way) assuming she is beyond the 13 year old mark and you have raised her to be a solid human being, listening to a bit of goth rock could do her good.

IN reference to the shocking images he uses in his performances, there is a good reason for that.

In this modern society it is harder and harder for an artist to be avante garde, something so many strive for. You must shock people exponentially more than the last person to be ahead of the curve. Religious art can be extremely bloody and graphic (i went to a Catholic school for 9 years, i know >_>) his shocking tactics are little more than a 21st century bid to capture his audience.

Personally i think he sounds like a cat trapped in a drier, but it is all a matter of personal taste. If your daughter likes it then she’ll listen to it at her friends houses, on the radio, on other peoples ipods, on youtube or on CD. if you allow it you will encourage her to form opinions openly and not be subversive and secretive about it.

Blorp.

Cadaverini.
There are two opposing views of this, one like you express but some don’t even want material that is questionable to even be in the house. It’s easy to see it both ways.

Some people don’t even want a Ouija boards or anything connected to the Occult in the house, this needs to be said in light of your statement while totally respecting what you say.

I once listened to a Catholic talk show and these guys burned their “Evil” types of CDs and they said they felt better about it when that happened and that a dark force had left. I do see that point of view too.

Marylin Manson is not a satanist, is the first thing you should know. I am a satanist, and he is very harmless and most certainly is not one.
