He reached his peak well over 10 years ago. I remember when I was in high school even back then a lot of kids I went to school with listened to him. It was just another example of pure shock value music listened to by insecure angsty teenagers trying to “stand out”.

Do you have a source on this?

In my experience, most of the “biting-heads-off-chickens” type of things turn out to be urban legends.
His own mouth–on MTV circa 1995–talking to VJ “Kennedy”–I witnessed it.

Dude had an album out in the mid 90’s called “Anti-christ Superstar”. That oughta tell you somethin’.

Music is just that, music. restricting music is like trapping your daughters mind and not lettingit develop it’s own ideas (in a safe way) assuming she is beyond the 13 year old mark and you have raised her to be a solid human being, listening to a bit of goth rock could do her good.

IN reference to the shocking images he uses in his performances, there is a good reason for that.

In this modern society it is harder and harder for an artist to be avante garde, something so many strive for. You must shock people exponentially more than the last person to be ahead of the curve. Religious art can be extremely bloody and graphic (i went to a Catholic school for 9 years, i know >_>) his shocking tactics are little more than a 21st century bid to capture his audience.

Personally i think he sounds like a cat trapped in a drier, but it is all a matter of personal taste. If your daughter likes it then she’ll listen to it at her friends houses, on the radio, on other peoples ipods, on youtube or on CD. if you allow it you will encourage her to form opinions openly and not be subversive and secretive about it.

Blorp.

Cadaverini.

Hmmm… I still wouldn’t discount the idea that such an admission was just more of him trying to create and maintain his stage persona than indicative of any genuine belief on his part.

He has always creeped me out. I’ve never felt comfortable listening to him. Even one of my college friends who had fallen away from the faith wasn’t comfortable listening to him.

I think the OP knows her daughter best and how she will react to any effort to restrict access to music. Cadaverini pointed out that forbidding her may just mean she will do so secretly. That’s possible, but it’s not the only possibility. When I was a teenager, I still respected and obeyed my parents rules. When I was in Junior High, my mom told my brother and me not to buy Skid Row’s second album because it had the “Parental Advisory” label on it. We never did buy that album and never would have dreamed of going behind her back about it. It depends upon the kid.

I don’t think even he believes in the message he’s sending with his “music”-he just knows shock value pays the bills, and seems like a regular dude outside of the scene.

Still, I try to avoid all his stuff at all costs…
I agree he’s all about shock value…I don’t really believe there’s a real message there…just a deluded person looking to make a buck. I like some songs just cause they are catchy…but I would use a lot of caution when it comes to impressionable teenagers. If anything I just laugh at how ridiculous he is.

He actually considered Himself a Republican Back In The Day. Don’t know about Now, though.
No, I am NOT Kidding. 🙂

Most of what he Does/Did IS indeed for Shock Value and to “Make A Point.” Basically—Question Authority, Organized Religion and Standards of Beauty (i.e., the Song “The Beautiful People.”)

His most famous Album WAS Called “AntiChrist Superstar,” after all, so that SHOULD give you an idea of what Brian Warner (Real Name) is all about.

According to this interview, Marilyn Manson received an honorary priesthood in the Church of Satan, but on a recent message board of Satanist, someone mentioned he has abandoned the Church of Satan philosophy. I don’t know. I do know that Boyd Rice was a mentor to Marilyn Manson and I used to be a fan of Boyd Rice when I wasn’t Catholic. He’s an interesting, but seriously mislead individual.

We need to pray for these individuals.

Just shock value? Uh, uh. Hey, mom, dad. Did you see my latest music video where i’m naked and gyrating? Oh, it’s just a stunt.

Stop making excuses for people spreading the wrong message. That includes anyone.

Or his statement about snorting coke off the cover of a Bible?

Young and old are impressionable. Dignity, self-restraint and respect preclude doing the stuff Manson does.

Peace,
Ed

He’s just an attention seeker. His autobiography was such a load of rubbish it was unbelievable.

He reminds me of Lady Gaga. Appeals to the attention-seeking for the sake of it generation, and enjoy using provocative religious images in a twisted way because they know it’ll gain them attention or will make some kind of “statement”.

I very strongly dislike people like this. I know a gay male teen who is exactly the same. He poses “artistically” in photographs wearing a rosary while wearing make-up, and posts them online. I find it offensive, but I don’t react to it even if he wears rosary beads in front of me - because that is what he wants. He probably doesn’t even know they’re called rosary beads, or what they represent.

Anyway, if your child listens to Marilyn Manson then I wouldn’t be incredibly concerned. I too had a “Gothic” phase and it didn’t affect me negatively. The gay teen I mentioned above is still that - a teenager. When you’re that age, you don’t understand things to the depth that you do as an adult and you are rebelling. I would just keep an eye on things to make sure they don’t take anything Manson says seriously.

No. As someone who has been involved in marketing campaigns for many years, I would encourage people to stay away from his work.

Peace,
Ed

It’s through people like you (along with Jack Chick, Jack Thompson, and other reactionaries) that he makes the most money.

P.S.

As much as I think he’s a jerk, I do like his rendition of This is Halloween. BP

Please tell me all you know about Marilyn Manson because my daughter is listiining to him and im concerned that he may be a creep.
may? be a creep? google him and get the info
if your daughter has suddenly become interested in music of this type and the culture that surrounds it you need to find out why

I like Alice Cooper’s take on Marilyn Manson:
A male singer, a woman’s name, lots of theatrics. Boy, I wish I’d thought of that.
Purely from an aesthetic perspective, permit me to recommend you introduce your offspring to Alice, instead. He’s not only better musically, he’s an Evangelical; all the dark stuff in his music is either completely over-the-top and tongue-in-cheek, or else a meditation on the fallenness of the world without Christ.

Manson, incidentally, is more “flake/jackass” than “Satanist”, FYI.

As one who will defend bands like Slayer and Lamb of God if Marilyn Manson is truly ordained as a minister of Satan this yes, obviously he is evil.

Frankly I think it’s very likely that he became ordained as a publicity stunt as others have said… however even if that’s the case it’s still wrong, ignorant and stupid.

Plus his music sucks.

I have not bought anything he did, and if you think people react to my opinions, then I need to tell you I have no mind control powers 🙂

You don’t need mind control powers to control your own mind and your own reactions. 😛
Neither do you need to buy his products for him to make you his tool.

By reacting, you become a tool to his publicity, savvy? BP

Nonsense.
