Is it OK to perform the act, the wife climaxes and is satisfied and then both husband and wife stop (ie husband does not climax)?

The method of birth control you are talking about is called cloitus interruptus. This is the sin of Onan and is mentioned explicitly in the Bible. Onan slept with his wife and allowed his semen to be spilled on the ground to deliberately prevent conception. The Lord killed Onan because this act was so displeasing to him. The Church teaches that this act is sinful.

I suggest you read this article by Catholic Answers:

Birth Control
catholic.com/library/Birth_Control.asp

Here is a quote from the article:

Contraception is “any action which, either in anticipation of the conjugal act [sexual intercourse], or in its accomplishment, or in the development of its natural consequences, proposes, whether as an end or as a means, to render procreation impossible” (Humanae Vitae 14). This includes sterilization, condoms and other barrier methods, spermicides, coitus interruptus (withdrawal method), the Pill, and all other such methods.

Contraception is any act which renders procreation impossible. The Church is against any actions which are used in order to prevent the possibility of life. The sexual act between husband and wife must be completed, and it must remain open to human life. That is, the sexual act must be completed in vaginal intercourse without any form of artificial contraception. All sexual acts must end in this fashion. This is one of the main reasons that the Church views masturbation to be sinful. All sexual acts outside of marriage are sinful, and all sexual acts which do not remain open to procreation are sinful. Sex is never sinful if it is an expression of love between a married couple and is ordered towards possible procreation.

Which is not what the OP described. The OP asked if it was a sin for the man to NOT climax at all.

I find it hard to believe that the man would not climax under these circumstances. However, if this is the case, then this would be a form of masturbation, at least for the woman. The Church teaches that masturbation is sinful for both men and women.

The Church does teach it’s wrong to engage in marital relations and not allow them to follow their natural course - whether through contraception or the withdrawal method or something like what you describe.
Of course it’s different if you did not intend it - if you started off with every intention of fully enjoying sexual relations and for some reason it didn’t quite work out the way you planned! These things do happen I believe and it doesn’t make you sinful in any way 🙂 . It is wrong though to actively choose this… and rather sad too because you are denying yourselves the whole act & that must be far better, and more unifying than this unfinished version.

Why? To be quite frank, it’s happened to me a few times. Things happen: stress can cause this, medication can cause it, your mind all of the sudden making a 180 degree turn can cause it.

Because of diabetes & hypertension, that became pretty much the norm for DH and I. I now avoid intimacy to avoid that situation.

I think the difference is the INTENT of the couple. If the intent is to finish up but something happens to prevent it, then there is no sin. Think babies waking up, physical difficulties, medical issues, etc…

If the intent is to just allow the wife to climax and then stop the act, then there is sin. The act should be both unitive and procreative, as God designed it. When it’s purposely frustrated, then we depart from God’s plan for sex.

Aside from all of that, if there’s a medical problem preventing the husband from completing the act, he should visit his doctor. There are therapies that can be pursued to help.

This is very true.

This topic is far from black and white and there is no easy answer for every situation. It would be wrong for a man to deliberately finish before climax with the intention of preventing contraception. However, there is no sin if he cannot climax due to health issues. I think it is better to consult with an expert or a priest on questions such as this.

Or any other unintentional issue like previously mentioned. It doesn’t HAVE to be health related to be sinless.

Hi,
It’s all about the intent. Does the husband intend to climax? Does he have a hope that he will climax? If the husband intends to climax and does not for some reason then no this is not a problem. But if the husband is stopping for some reason intentionally then it is a problem. Especially if that something is contraceptive.
