Jesus is questioned about his disciples not fasting, and in reply He gives two analogies: 1. new patch on old clothing, 2. new wine into old wineskin.

is the new patch/new wine referring to the disciples? does this mean that the disciples need to be “shrunk”/“aged”, or does this mean that the old clothes/wineskins are referring to the old covenant and that the disciples are now part of the new covenant and will never fit into the old? i am also not really sure why Jesus said this in reply to a question about fasting.

any insight is greatly appreciated.

The disciples had no need of fasting because Jesus was with them. After Jesus ascended, fasting would be important for His disciples. Fasting helps to reminds us of our dependence on God for everything, and helps to control the impulses of sin, but is not meant to be a ridged “law”-more of a sign of appreciation for and trust in the goodness of Grace to help us conquer our failings, reduce our sin and to seek the Mercy of God always.
 
dang, you are right.

The New Covenant Church (the new cloth/new wine) does not need to be constricted by the Old Testament (Mosaic) Covenant. This is demonstrated by Acts 15 with the proclamation by James to the Gentiles who don’t need to be circumcised.

The Mosaic Covenant required for people to fast on Mondays and Wednesdays, I believe.

I’d say yes … old wineskin is old covenant. And, Jesus is the new wine … thus, need for new covenant.

Most Jews of time of Jesus rejected both the ‘new wine’ & the ‘new covenant’. Thus, gentiles were grafted in to tree of life.
 
thanks everyone. i figured it had something to do with new vs. old covenant/law, but it is always good to verify.
i didn’t know about the mosaic requirement for fasting, so Jesus’ reply makes more sense now i know 🙂
