The word “gospel” literally means “good news”. Isaiah had prophesied that the Messiah would come in the power of the Holy Spirit to bring freedom to those oppressed by sin and evil (see Isaiah 61:1-2). Jesus came to set people free from the worst tyranny possible – the tyranny of slavery to sin and the fear of death, and the destruction of both body and soul. God’s power alone can save us from emptiness and poverty of spirit, from confusion and error, and from the fear of death and hopelessness.

The gospel of salvation is “good news” for us today.

Note that the miracles of Jesus are often associated with the faith that the recipient of that miracle has in Jesus, in God to be healed. Since Jesus was known in this place, who His mother was etc. the people did not have faith in Him therefore no miracles. The sisters mentioned were extended family members i.e. cousins for which the words translated as brothers and sisters are used at the time of Jesus the Christ.

Jesus could have performed any miracle He chose; He chose not to. Read the whole gospel. There are times when Jesus chooses not to reward people for their lack of faith. In contrast, He performs miracles for others almost unwittingly when they have great faith (e.g. the woman with the hemmorage).

“Familiarity breeds contempt”. It’s human nature that you do not respect those whom you know intimately. The old prophets were often cast out and killed by the communities they preached to.

The sisters are cousins. Only one “sister” is named elsewhere in the bible. In a parallel list in the gospel, James are Joseph are described as “brothers” of the Lord, but as children of a “Mary” other than Jesus’ mother.

Cornelius a Lapide answers wonderfully saying,

And He could not do any miracles there: Could not, that is, would not, because He did not think it proper to give what was holy to dogs, that is, to force His miracles upon unbelieving and ungrateful citizens. So could not is used for would not (Gen. 37:4, and John 7:7). “Because,” says Victor of Antioch on this passage, “two things must coincide for the attaining of health, namely, the faith of those who need healing, and the power of him who will heal; therefore, if either of these be wanting, the blessing of a cure will not readily be attained.”
