Humans are the head of material Creation. Adam was the head of humanity. Adam’s sin didn’t just bring death to humanity; he also brought the curse of death and fallen nature on the innocent animals… and plants… and amoebas… and rocks… and plasma, for that matter. That’s what Adam’s mystical rulership did, for good and for ill; and that’s why Jesus was loved and mourned and obeyed by Nature even more than by humans.
That’s why “all Creation is groaning to be saved.” Not because calcium carbonate was capable of sinning; but because Adam screwed up the perfection of all created things as well as of humans.
I know this isn’t exactly emphasized in CCD, but it’s not exactly obscure. That’s why we say we “live in a fallen world,” not just “humans stink but the world is perfectly perfect.” That’s why we look forward to a “peaceable kingdom” at the end of time, in “a new heaven and a new earth.”
