This chapter confuses me. My study Bible mentions how Christ was denouncing legalism and traditions.

How am I to understand this as a Catholic?

Think logically. Did Christ denounce legalism? Does that mean that under Christ there is no moral law? And as far as Tradition goes name one Tradition the Church has that Christ was talking about here.

5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”

6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
7 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.

8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”

The point is if you honor Him with your words and “liturgy” but he is not in your heart then it doesn’t matter. Now why would you think that means don’t honor Him with words or “liturgy”

Out of a religious context. If I say I love my kids but then don’t care for them I’m a liar. Now no where should you deduce that one should not say they love their kids
