Couldn’t the mark on the hand and forehead really mean worship and service?
The mark on the forehead representing worship and the mark on the hand representing service.
Why can’t it just be a mark? Was John so stupid that he couldn’t have said worship and service if that is what he meant?

In Ezekiel 9:3-6, one angel marks the forehead of everyone faithful who mourns for the bad stuff going on in Jerusalem. The mark is described as a taw, a cross-shaped or T-shaped mark made on sheep you own, or the letter T in the Hebrew alphabet. Everybody not marked is killed.

In Rev. 7:2 and forward, one angel has a seal/stamp/signet belonging to God, with which he marks the forehead of everyone faithful, the ones who can’t be harmed. Immediately afterward, there’s an association with the white robed saints.

Both of these passages were associated with Baptism by the early Christians.

Rev. 13:16 is an evil opposite of Baptism. The baddie is marking everyone on earth as his flock of sheep, his property, whether they are or not. By adding a mark on the right hand, there’s an evil opposite to Jewish phylacteries, which were bound on the forehead or right hand to remind one of God’s Word while one prayed or did daily work. It also is an evil opposite of passages like Isaiah 49:16 (ā€œBehold, I have inscribed you [Jerusalem] on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before Me.ā€) and Songs 8:6 (ā€œSet me as a seal on your arm.ā€)

As for the rest, early Christian commentators pretty much assumed that the mark of the Beast would be the number of the Beast or a symbolic ā€œmystery of iniquityā€, but not any kind of device. Identifying the Beast’s human name was always a popular sport (ā€œNeroā€ and ā€œTitanā€ were both popular answers), but the mark itself really wasn’t all that interesting to them.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the mark of Cain, which also asserted God’s ownership and forbid people to hurt Cain.

ā€œAnd I saw thrones; and they sat upon them; and judgement was given unto them; and the souls of them that were beheaded for the testimony of Jesus, and for the word of God, and who had not adored the beast nor his image, nor received his character on their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. The rest of the dead lived not, till the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.ā€ (Rev.20:5-6).

Those of us who may live in the time of the antichrist will be given a choice. We will either accept the antichrist and his economic system, or we will not. Whatever is the mark of this antichrist, his economic system is introduced after he destroys the prosperity of the Babylon system. (Rev.17:16).

We are told by the apostle Paul that there will be a great falling away at this time. Let us hope and pray for one another that we keep the faith until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ…

Or… you could read the Book of Daniel, which is a lot better way to understand the Antichrist and the ā€œabomination of desolationā€ of trying to get worshiped in God’s place, than any amount of ā€œsecret codesā€ and counting stuff up.

The Book of Revelation uses numeric symbolism, yes. (Heck, so does the Book of Daniel, and Revelation’s other ā€œkeyā€, the Book of Ezekiel.)

But it’s mostly about mending your ways and living in Christ and His Church, and letting Christ fill you with His peace no matter what troubles the world gives us. There’s absolutely no reason to tie yourself into knots about it; just follow Christ’s commands from the Gospel and keep up a hopeful heart while you wait for His Coming. If Revelation is taking your eyes off Christ and making you fearful, you’re not reading the book the way it was intended.

If you’re truly interested in the Book of Revelation, Mr. Weinrich’s digest of several Greek and Latin early Christian commentaries, and his more recent full translation of four ā€œLatin commentariesā€ (Saints Victorinus, Apringius, Caesarius, and Bede the Venerable) are both full of interesting insights. (Albeit his notes and translation come from an evangelical viewpoint.) St. Irenaeus’ book, Against Heresies, has a big chunk about the Book of Revelation (Book V, Chapters 25-30) with lots of his thoughts on Antichrist; and that’s available online for free. So is a free translation of St. Victorinus’ commentary (at bombaxo.com, by a guy from the Orthodoxy side of things) and an older translation of Bede’s Commentary on the Apocalypse (lots of places - just run a search for Bede and Apocalypse).

There are also all sorts of good Catholic Biblical commentaries out there from times closer to our own. Hahn’s book The Lamb’s Supper is a very good start.

Using the most reliable Bible Code language ever
Bible codes and esotericism are against the very spirit of Christianity, which is an open revelation for all of mankind. The closest thing coming to a code in the Bible is that numbers may be used as symbols for particular ideas, but these are to be found clearly in the plain text of Scripture.

Some sects of Judaism and Protestantism may accept seeking hidden knowledge in the Bible through codes, but that is nothing but a symptom of gnosticism, the very first heresy.

In Ezekiel God has the Holy Spirit place his mark on all ho are the remnant before the city falls but none can see the mark except the prophet. We are sealed in Christ by baptism and the Holy Spirit is our earnest on God’s promises to us concerning the sacramental and Apostolic Faith.

For this reason I think the mark being mentioned on the forehead speaks of a state of mind as well as a failure to mark our children in baptism and the mark on the hand speaks of a spirit of the world which maintains that all that is real is that which you can hold in your hand.

But of course this is my personal interpretation so take for what its worth.

God Bless

You have gotten me curious as to who you are refering to. Do you think you could send me an email as to who you think it is at bdliston@windstream.net

A mark on the forehead was a sign of ownership in the ancient world. Slaves would be marked on their forehead by their owner.

The ancient Christians did not make the sign of the cross as we know it but made a small cross on their forehead. It was a sign of obedience and slavery to Christ.

The sign of ownership on the forehead of a slave is probably what John is referecing. One can be a slave to sin and the devil or a slave to Christ. There is a reference to the practice later in Revelation.

***…and his servants *will worship him. They will look upon his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. (Revelation 22:3-4)

I make a small cross on the forehead of my daughters every night when they go to bed and like to think of the name of Jesus on my forehead on Ash Wednesday.

Why can’t it just be a mark? Was John so stupid that he couldn’t have said worship and service if that is what he meant?
And why can’t the Good Samaritan parable just be a story? Was Jesus so stupid that He couldn’t simply have said ā€˜be good to everyone in need, whether you like them or not’ if that is what He meant?

If the mark of the beast is something implanted under the skin, how could John have seen it?
He had a vision. If God wanted to show him something, he wouldn’t have much trouble showing him that.

I lifted the following from - traditioninaction.org/Questions/B249_StNilus.html

St. Nilus was a 5th century mystic who pinned the following predictions down to the 20th century.
The Prophecy of St. Nilus
After the year 1900, toward the middle of the 20th century, the people of that time will become unrecognizable. When the time for the Advent of the Antichrist approaches, people’s minds will grow cloudy from carnal passions, and dishonor and lawlessness will grow stronger. Then the world will become unrecognizable.
People’s appearances will change, and it will be impossible to distinguish men from women due to their shamelessness in dress and style of hair. These people will be cruel and will be like wild animals because of the temptations of the Antichrist. There will be no respect for parents and elders, love will disappear, and Christian pastors, Bishops and priests will become vain men, completely failing to distinguish the right-hand way from the left.
At that time, the morals and traditions of Christians and of the Church will change. People will abandon modesty, and dissipation will reign. Falsehood and greed will attain great proportions, and woe to those who pile up treasures. Lust, adultery, homosexuality, secret deeds and murder will rule in society.
Telephones, airplanes, submarines
He will also give depraved wisdom to an unhappy man so that he will discover a way by which one man can carry on a conversation with another from one end of the earth to the other. At that time men will also fly through the air like birds and descend to the bottom of the sea like fish. And when they have achieved all this, these unhappy people will spend their lives in comfort without knowing, poor souls, that it is deceit of the Antichrist. And, the impious one! – he will so complete science with vanity that it will go off the right path and lead people to lose faith in the existence of God in three hypostases.
How did he know?

Pretty simple. God told him.

And why can’t the Good Samaritan parable just be a story? Was Jesus so stupid that He couldn’t simply have said ā€˜be good to everyone in need, whether you like them or not’ if that is what He meant?
It was just a story to illustrate a point. There was no one named, such as in the case of the Rich man and Lazarus.

Jesus was so smart as to use an example of how the despised elements of Jewish culture could follow God’s real law better than the list/block checkers who do so without love of man because they actually hate God in many ways.

The Apocalypse (Revelation), and the associated Mark of the Beast: the mark is indeed gematria and is indeed actually related to a particular person in coming times (when, who knows?), and certainly isn’t some mere allegory. There have been types of this man and system for a while. The culmination is yet to occur.

Refusal of the Mark is to refuse worship to this global (satanic) entity known as the AntiChrist.

It’s not some spiritual mark, nor is it some vague concept which extends through history. NO, it is the culmination of history’s forerunners, and the final attempt by Satan to overthrow God- that’s the entire point.

To say this is an allegorical mark which no one can see and is accidentally or unknowingly taken is to say that the people who refuse are allegorically beheaded or accidentally beheaded spiritually. The only ones who lose their true spiritual head are the ones who take the mark- for they shall lose Christ, eternally. 😦

Re: ā€œThe Prophecy of Pseudo-Nilusā€

Orthodox Wiki has a pretty full entry on this, as well as some good links.

This page gives the linguistic and historical arguments.

It’s an urban legend document, if you want to be kind; or a fake created as a joke, if you want to be blunt. Versions come in all sorts of lengths. The text has been ā€œupdatedā€ to fit people’s ideas, and it is not collected in the works of any of the saints named Nilus.

From the evidence linked above, it sounds like it’s a pious Greek’s satire in prophecy form (in the Swiftian manner) which later readers misunderstood, and to which anti-Communist stuff was added in the 1950’s.

For folks who don’t know this – one of the most common satirical strategies before modern times was to write something very harsh, and then claim it was a prophecy by Merlin or St. XYZ or Mother Shipton or whoever. This allowed you to write satisfying political commentary and complaints without getting arrested for treason. If there was a power struggle going on, you could also write fake prophecies in favor of your guy and against the guy you didn’t like.

There are reams and reams of this stuff in world literature. (As opposed to the reams and reams of prophetic literature by people actually describing religious or other kinds of mental experiences, or the fakes of it by people running hoaxes and con games.)

OK, thanks for the tip off. I’ll accept that St. Nilus’ prophecy is probably false, but I also remember reading somewhere about another middle ages mystic who predicted similar technical inventions, in the same time frame, but it’s a bit hard to find.

Regardless, getting back to the question which prompted me to write, God wouldn’t have any trouble showing somebody something in a vision, including a chip under the skin (which was the original question).

I’ve had brief visions myself, but they usually involve my old Presbyterian (ex Methodist) pastor. He just turns up and says things, but they’re related to stuff I’ve been thinking about eg. ā€œThe Catholic Church is closest to the truthā€ (His actual words).

So I don’t have much trouble accepting it because I’ve had too many experiences of my own in various ways. On the other hand, I usually don’t take things uncritically, although I fell for the St. Nilus one by the look of it.

There’s supposed to be one around by some saint about a bomb destroying a ā€œcity in Persiaā€ (ie. Iran), which I am a bit dubious about. Have you heard anything about that one?

Brother, do not speak to the dead. Period. As a Lutheran I am somewhat dubious of the visions of Mary, but the doctrine of the dormition of Mary goes back to the earliest days of the Church, as such I do not think a vision of Mary would necessarily qualify as speaking with the dead. Also consider that all of the visions of the Blessed Virgin have pointed to the Glory of Christ above all, I would be very suspicious of any vison which tells me anything other than Christ is King, God, Lord, and to be Glorified above all. For any spirit which says anything else, even something seemingly good (btw I am taking RCIA this fall God willing) I would still stay away from it.

Remember speaking with the dead is necromancy and is the fastest way to demonization I can imagine. I hate that our culture has put so many*** ghost blah blah*** TV shows on because these folks are not speaking to ghosts they are conversing with demons and the Bible is pretty clear about that. And if they actually are speaking with dead, well that is still necromancy.

Stay far far away from those things. For the sake of your soul I implore you to not trifle with things you cannot understand, God has warned us very clearly to give no room to this sort of thing and I think He has done so for our protection because he loves us.

I beg you.

I beg you.

I beg you.

For the sake of your soul run as fast as you can from this sort of thing and cling to God. Confess it. Repent of it. And take the Lord’s body and blood and be cleansed of it.

I say this because i am a former witch, and it was not until I understood that i could eat the flesh of my Lord that i was moved to confess and to believe in sacramental forgiveness and to take the cleansing of the Holy table of our God.

Run for your life.

God Bless.

Brother,

I don’t go speaking to the dead, other than on the singular occasion when my father turned up in my room on the very same night he died, most likely at that very time, and most unexpectedly, started with an apology, we argued and conversed, and at the end he disappeared with one almighty scream. And he hasn’t been back since, nor would I expect him to, because I think he’s in hell, and went there that night.

On a few occasions my old Protestant pastor has turned up in visions, usually with one word lines of advice on various issues, and then simply disappeared, and that’s it. I came to regard him as a spiritual father, although he did discourage me.

I do not go around speaking with the dead, and whenever I have a peculiar spiritual experience, it comes unannounced and unexpected.

Simple as that. So what?

The question is the answer. If you cannot see the danger then I do not know what else to say. The Bible is most clear about this sort of thing and you say ā€œSo what?ā€

God Bless
