For the first time, Maronite catholic patriarch of Antioch, Bechara Boutros al-Rahi is visiting Kerala, India. He will attend different functions of the Syro Malankara Catholic church and will conduct discussions with its Major Archbishop Baselius Mar Cleemis.
Earlier Major Archbishop of Syro Malankara catholic church, Baselius Mar Cleemis was present during Pope’s Lebanon visit. Also, Syriac Catholic patriarch of Antioch, Ignatius Younan and Baselius Mar Cleemis together visited Syriac Orthodox patriarch of Antioch, Ignatius Zakka at Lebanon before Pope’s arrival.

Kochi: Patriarch of Lebanese Maronite Syrian Church, Bechara Boutros al-Rai, who is on a four-day visit to Kerala, today attended a special mass at the St Peter's Cathedral of the Syro Malankara Catholic Church here.
The Patriarch, who arrived yesterday, would be the chief guest tomorrow at the 82nd anniversary of the “Reunion” movement, which marked the joining of a section of Malankara Orthodox Church followers to the Catholic fold, leading to the formation of Syro Malankara Catholic Church.

The spiritual head of over 3.5 million adherents of Maronite Church, Patriarch al-Rai was given a warm reception by senior bishops, clergy, religious and laity of the Malankara church on his arrival here.

The Patriarch noted that both the Lebanese church and Malankara church were rooted in the same Syriac tradition and wanted to further strengthen the cultural and liturgical co-operation between the two churches.

Catholicos Mar Besalios Cleemis of Syro Malankara Church was among those present during the special mass held at the Cathedral.

We speak of the prospect of unity of the Apostolic Churches.

It starts with unity within the Catholic Church itself.

Many years! to the faithful and hierarchs of these blessed Churches of common origin!

What is that metal stand they are standing by and looking at? I like the flower like adornments on their Epitrachil. I see the Epitrachil is a single piece not joined down the front as it would be in the Byzantine tradition.

That is called a Mar Thoma Nilavilakku or Saint Thomas Cross Lamp. It is a symbol for the Syrian Christians of Kerala. The cross is perched upon a common type of lamp stand found in Kerala. These types of lamps can be found in St.Thomas Christian Churches as well as homes. Sometimes they are lit before Holy Qurbana and other ceremonies. Also its common custom in Kerala to give epitrachils adorned with flowers when bishops visit churches.
