Christ is risen!

I had a question regarding the anaphoras in the Maronite Liturgy

I know that there are many, many anaphoras in the Maronite Liturgy. Is there some sort of rule dictating which anaphoras are to be used on what days of the liturgical year, or is it entirely up to the priest to choose the anaphora?

From what I’ve gathered (and I could be wrong) there are a few days where the Anaphora is prescribed, but for the most part it’s up to the individual priest. I’ll try and ask my parish priest or one of our subdeacons today.

The calendar isn’t long enough for all of them to have a prescribed Sunday . . .

“many, many” is an understatement . . .

Really? More than 50?
Out of curiosity, are they all ancient, or have any been written in the past couple centuries?

Ancient.

If memory serves, a Maronite priest explained to me that there were 99–if you only counted the ones with English translations! 😱😲

(leaving aside the question as to why translate . . . but I suppose asking every Maronite priest to be fluent in ancient Aramaic is a bit much . . .)

Confirmed with my parish priest that the choice of Anaphora is left to the discretion of the celebrant. He says he tries to choose one that, in some way, fits in with the feast being celebrated that day.

Other than, I assume, the Words of Institution and some form of Epiklesis… any other standard elements?

Great. Thank you very much for taking the time to find an answer to my question. May God reward you abundantly.

You’re right about that!

I heard there was at least over 70, not all of them translated into English.

I don’t recall the exact number of Anaphorae off the top of my head, but only 8 have been translated into English for official use (not counting the Signing of the Chalice). If anyone knows of a source for the other Anaphorae translated into English, I’d love to see them.
