I really need advice on a fairly complicated situation. I am a single Catholic and have never been married.

I have me an absolutely amazing man. He is very interested in becoming Catholic and wants any children we have to be raised as Catholics.

The complications are that he is a non-Catholic Christian and was married, through a civil marriage (not a religious one) to a Muslim (he remained Christian). He then got a civil divorce, again in a civilian court.

He does not know whether he was baptised because his folks past away when he was young and he does not have any other close relatives living.

My question is what is his status considered by the our Church? Would we be able to marry in a Catholic Church?

With kind regards, Janet.

Your priest should be able to help you determine what he would need in order for y’all to marry in the Church.
Congrats!

I see serious red flags. Is he born in your country and have full legal status?

As far as him being Catholic he can just get re-baptised if theres any question. I must say that the relatives thing is a red flag though. There’s an old parable about a lone wanderer that isnt very good… I think… Cant remember.

Please find out about a nice, understanding priest – if you don’t already know one – and go talk to him as soon as possible. Don’t take any steps without consulting with a priest or two.

You should be able to sort this out with your parish priest as they will have to be involved eventually. I will pray for you.

Memorare

REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Just to mention, there is no re-baptism. We profess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins in our Creed. Additional “baptisms” would simply be a bit of a public shower, really. An instance to get wet. No graces included.

OP, as others have stated you should meet with your priest. He will be able to help determine what needs to be accomplished prior to the marriage. Best wishes, and you are in my prayers!

There is such a thing as “conditional baptism”. And the wording of it takes consideration of that. It goes something like "IF you are not baptized, I baptize you…etc.

If baptismal status is unknown, that is what needs to take place.

As far as the rest of the information…there are many questions to be asked and that is why the OP needs to seek a holy priest, or two (as another poster mentioned.)

May the Lord lead the OP according to His perfect plan.

There is reason for concern, but given how long the annulment and marriage prep process takes, I think it should be pretty clear by the end of the process whether or not he is a nice person.

You will need a priest to determine his marital status with the Church.

All non Catholic to non Catholic marriages are presumed to be valid so he would need an annulment, On the other hand if he becomes Catholic he can use Pauline Privilege.
