My wife and I have been married for twenty years, have six children and are in our mid to late forties. We do not feel that God is calling us to have anymore children. My wife recently found out that she has the hpv virus and has had to have several surgical procedures. It got it has a result of either my or her sexual relations before our marriage. In males there are no symptoms but women can have sores and get cervical cancer. My wife has had outbreaks after intercourse. My question is would it be a sin for me to use a condom? We would continue to use NFP and only have relations during her infertile stages.

The Vatican has given guidance on the subject of condoms in the situation of an HIV infected spouse. In the case of HIV the Vatican states that, no, condoms are never moral.

You can, therefore, apply this to your situation which is analogous and prayerfully discern that you might be called to abstain for a period of time or indefinitely.

I hope the mods won’t get mad with me… this is not meant as “medical advice” rather “education”:

Condoms would not protect you even if it would be morally permissible to use them. HPV can be transmitted by contact of the genital areas not covered by the condom. In addition, HPV is transmitted by oral-to-genital (mouth-to-genital) contact and it causes head and neck cancer both in men and in women, but especially in men. Your best bet from a medical standpoint is probably to avoid sexual contact with your wife, but please talk to your doctor. However, it’s common knowledge that the HPV virus is found not only in the vagina but also on the skin of the vulva (external part of female genitalia), and also on the skin of male genitalia that are not covered by a condom. Thus, condoms cannot block the transmission of HPV during sexual intercourse. Another item of general medical knowledge is that HPV can cause cancer in men also - primarily head and neck cancers (which include cancers of the throat, tongue, trachea, and so on), but also cancers of the penis and anus.

Consult your doctor for long term treatment and management of the condition. Men and women with herpes have faced this type of situation for decades.

There are likely times when it would be safe and times when it would not be safe.

I highly recommend calling the St. Pius VI Institute, they are a Catholic medical and ethical organization and have a lot of knowledge about fertility, infertility, and all things gynecological and sexual.

Good Luck.

That’s not what they said!

You are misled.
:yukonjoe:

That doesn’t make sense. You said the Vatican made a statement. I said they didn’t say what you said. I linked to an article with quotes on what the Vatican said.

How does, “You are misled” logically follow?

Because the NYT is not an authentic source of Catholic teaching. The news media’s misquotation of the Holy Father is absurd and scandalous. The Vatican had to issue a response because so many people have been misled by these inaccurate media reports.

The Church’s stance regarding condoms use due to HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases has **not **changed.

I didn’t intend to imply it changed. I think the pope and bishops speak well enough for themselves that they don’t need me to interpret for them. The documents you link strengthen my assumption.

I will check the links to the Vatican and consult my priest. As far as abstaining from sex, you can forget about that. I don’t believe that is what God wants or intended for our marriage.

This sounds mostly OK for HPV, except the “sores” part. Warts are possible, but typically not sores.
My wife has had outbreaks after intercourse.
This does not sound like HPV. Herpes simplex (HSV) maybe, or other problem, but not HPV.
