Marriage as a Christian Sacrament

When did marriage become a Christian Sacrament?

There is much talk about same sex marriage and in one such discussion, I read an article claiming that Christians did not consider marriage as a Sacrament until the eleventh century.
This seems highly unlikely to me, but does anyone have any references or books they can recommend on this?
 
Perfect link, Paul, thanks. And not only is marriage one of the 7 Sacraments, and therefore de fide and dogmatic, it is only sacramental between a man and a woman. Hopefully that is just stating the obvious.🙂
 
Thanks for the link, Paul. Reading it, I can see where the author of that article I mentioned got his notion from. He is likely referring to the Innocent IV’s profession of faith to the waldenisians in 1208 where matrimony was included among the sacraments. Because marriage was ‘not expressly and formally included among the sacraments earlier’ some who don’t do their research may think that the Church really didn’t consider marriage a sacrament until the 12th century officially.
As I wrote initially, I recognised the falseness of the authors claim, but its good to know where to look to find the truth.
 
It’s been a heterosexual Sacrament for as long as there’s been a Church on Earth. Some denominations like our siblings in Christ, the Episcopal Church and the ELCA have made same-sex marriage a Sacrament, though. It got people absolutely livid.
