I just read something that stated that marriage brings about three relationships: the one between man and woman; the one between God and man; and the one between God and woman. I always understood marriage as a relationship between the couple and God. Can someone please elaborate on this? Thank you.

Just curious, what was the “something” that you read? I’m a bit familiar with Bishop Fulton Sheen’s “Three to Get Married.” Was this what you read?

Though I’m not married and infact in high school ill try to give a hack at this it may not be good bug bare with me. I was always told in marriage or any intimate loving relationship God should always be the center. A priest I listened to once said when you get a boyfriend or girlfriend on that first date swing by the church and say a small prayer together whether the other person in the relationship is catholic or not. Now to me that basically means I am a devout catholic and I do pray and as my girlfriend or boyfriend you must accept that and you must accept me and God and you must allow God to be in our relationship. I also would like to add it basically means I have a relationship with God and now I have just invited said boyfriend or girlfriend in and now it’s a tri relationship if you will. Now for marriage it is kind of the same way accept when you take this step your saying ok I love this person and since they want to marry me it mean we both have our own relationships with God and we have shared one for a while now we are making that shared relationship permanent. To me I get out of that is both people have a relationship with God since baptism as individuals and when they started dating they created a temporary relationship with God between them and him however when they get married their shared love and relationship with God becomes permanent thus making marriage have three relationships. Thanks for posting and God Bless.

Generally, if you have a relationship with a couple, you thereby have a relatsionship with each person in that couple, so I’m not sure I see the distinction.

No. but maybe they were referencing to him. I will take a look too. thanks

I heard this at a wedding not long ago. Picture an equalateral triangle (all sides equal in length) with God at the top, the husband at the bottom left and the wife at the bottom right. As the husband and wife, as individuals, draw closer to God, they, in turn, become closer to each other. If they, instead, move away from God, they will become further from each other. It’s an illustration of the importance of God in the lives of both the husband and the wife, not only as a couple, but as individuals. Ideally, the triangle becomes infinitely small as both husband and wife become closer and closer to God.
