Hi all,
I am having a BAD few months. I’m married, one child. My wife and I were Mormon. I found out that the LDS church is a lie and a sham and have left, as you can see from my signature received into the church last month. My wife is divorcing me because Ive become Catholic. She wants to code in the parenting plan that our son (who is 7) will be raised Mormon. I strenuously object to this. We were going to the divorce without attorneys because we were in general agreement, until she started insisting on this provision. Looks like from this developement we’ll need outside intervention. Does anybody have any experience similar to this? Any advice. I don’t know generally where the courts stand on religious disagreements between divorcing parents.

Thanks for reading

Charles

I’m very sorry you’re going through this difficult situation. Unfortunately I very much doubt there is anything the courts would do regarding how your child will be raised. That’s pretty much up to you two.

The only thing I wanted to note, if you didn’t know already, is the principle of Pauline privilege at play here. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pauline_privilege

It’s a rather unique circumstance which I hope gives you peace for your personal future in regards to relationships, though obviously does not help in regards to your child. For that I can only offer prayer.

I remember you. I am sorry it is getting worse. However, I don’t think we are allowed to give anything that looks like legal advice here. More than likely you would need to consult with a lawyer in your state. It sounds like that would be the most reliable. Also there may be a website on divorce in your state so you can familiarize yourself with the law. But this is a case where you definitely need to be aware of the laws your state provides, for dads, and for your situation. I am sorry you are going through this.

We can provide moral and spiritual support though.

I am so sorry that this has happened. My wife also divorce me after I became Catholic. I am becoming involved in a new support group at my Parrish for separated and divorced Catholics. The truth is that we need each other to get through these difficulties. I wish you the best and would like to emphasize to all those who are considering it, stay away from mixed marraiges!
