Another story about a Priest who leaves the Church to get married. Heavily romanticizes abandoning one’s committment to the Sacrament of Holy Orders, and puts in a plug for ordination of women.

This quote is especially interesting:
Jim was assigned to help her coordinate the campus ministries and the two worked closely together. It proved to be their undoing. “We were both Vatican II babies – cradle Catholics,” said Andy. “We spent a lot of time getting to know each other, discovering each other’s beliefs.”
and this one:
They especially appreciated the [United Church of Christ’s] inclusiveness. “We both have a heart for the gay and lesbian community,” Andy said. “We know what it’s like to love someone dearly and be told it’s bad. We fell in love. We didn’t believe love could be bad or that God’s command to love one another knows boundaries.”
Jim’s ordination was transferred to the UCC in 1992. With the encouragement of her pastor, Andy left for seminary in San Francisco in 1995. Jim and the kids soon followed. Three years later she was ordained. “A dream a Catholic woman could never dream,” she said.
The media tries to make it out to be a happy story - I think it’s, actually, quite a sad story.

It is a sad story but hopefully they will repent, reconcile and come home to Rome

Through the intercession of Saint John Vianney may many vocations to priesthood flourish

CastroLang?
I guess I am a little surprised that they haven’t made the L a lower case letter after 26 years. Certainly it would make the last name less obtrusive. That was basically the solution used by the current mayor of Los Angeles used when he, as Antonio Villar, married Corina Raigosa and the couple became Antonio and Corina Villaraigosa.

Indeed. At least Villar and Raigosa come from the same language group and do not flow too badly together.

One sin leads to another…and another…and goes on from there…

When people no longer believe that there is a thing called sin, they will continue to advocate to which is sinful.

Andy recalled, “He opened the office door for my friend and me. He said, ‘I’m Father Jim,’ and I thought, no way! He looked like my little brother!”
Was it just me or did anybody else find this a little creepy?

Well…i don`t think it helped the situation. 🤷
Sounds like she threw herself at him: she dumped her “suiter”!

i cant help feeling that the Churchs loss of a priest and a lay member wasnt a total loss: "We were both Vatican II babies." And then, years later, being attracted to the United Church of Christ, with its “inclusiveness”.
And her “ordination”.
Isn`t the UCC the outfit that refuses to call God “Father”?

There`s no chance of either of those two doing further harm to the flock!
i think the Church did OK out of it. 👍
Of course, they need our prayers.

It would have taken some time and work, but why didn’t Jim try to get released from his vows? I imagine it is difficult, and takes some time, but it does happen sometimes. If they both loved the Church so much, they should have thought it was worth fighting for. I understand they think it is worth it now, but they might not think so in the long run. It gives me chills just thinking about it. Definitely sad, and yes, prayers for the couple and their families.

That was sickening. She made the moves on him, and decided that he was available, regardless of his vows.

Andy had a longtime boyfriend that her family hoped she’d marry,* but after she met Jim, she broke up with her suitor. “I fell in love with him (Jim) within two weeks of meeting him,” she said.**

They both struggled against the powerful attraction that had captivated them. A month after they met as they walked back from a Campus Crusade for Christ meeting, they paused to sit on the gymnasium steps. Andy said, “We lay back and looked up at the stars … .”

Jim interjected, “And you blew it!”

She laughed. “I’d decided to tell him that he was really special, but I wanted to just be friends. I leaned over and kissed him on the cheek and he leaned back and kissed me on the lips, and that was it!”

Two weeks later Andy wrote in her journal, “I want to marry him.”*

Notice SHE kisses HIM first. Very terrible story. He should have left that office and found another job immediately. Instead they both ripped up their lives - he doesn’t say what his family did when he left the priesthood.

That is a bit of an overstatement. The UCC has a congregational structure, so each individual church is free to accept or reject what is decided on by the central denomination. However, the Statement of Faith at the denomination’s website lists two versions, one referring to God the Father and a newer version which is more gender-neutral.
ucc.org/beliefs/statement-of-faith.html

Each UCC congregation is free to use either version as a guide for worship, or to modify them as they see fitting.

…he, as Antonio Villar, married Corina Raigosa and the couple became Antonio and Corina Villaraigosa.
I’m always amused by such short-sighted thinking. What happens when their daughter Maria marries Juan Hernandez? Juan and Maria Hernandezaigosa? And their son Diego marries Alicia Villenueve to become Diego and Alcia Hernandezaigosavillenueve?

Where does it end? 🙂
