“30 For at the resurrection men and women do not marry; no, they are like the angels in heaven.” Matthew 22:30
Why? What is better about this state than the state on earth? Why is it better to be an angel than a human? 🙂

At the first glance, I can say that men and women will be with the soul and the resurrected body in the heaven. Men will stay males and women stay females. The alterity and the complementarity of humanity will stay.

“like the angels in heaven” it is a comparison and not an identification. The angels are only spirits, us the humanity, we are body and soul and we will stay after the resurection with the new state of life (resurrected life). The Mother of God is in the heaven with Jesus (Son), Father (the creator) and Holy Spirit

About marriage, normally no marriage in the heaven. According to the catholic tradition there is no eternal marriage. But, the meaning of no eternal marriage was not defined in the details by the catholic church.

What is the meaning of resurrection for each of us??? I think only the new union between soul and body. Death is the separation of soul from body, resurrection is the new unity.

In the heaven we will stay human. To want an angel is not very catholic, we has to respect our nature.

I read that there are somethings we should to do to imitate the angels, i.e. virginity. So I wonder why? Why are we imitating angels when we are not angels?

By nature, we are human beings, males and females, at the image of God. Human beings are composed of two elements: body and soul. Angels were created by God, but they are pure spirits. They are not created at the image of God like human. Thus, humanity is the best and the most beautiful creation of God, at his Image, it is a privilege.

At the beginning of the catholic church some theologians even some Saints have a personal view on this topic, but catholic church with the authority of Pope has not said okay, or stays silencious.

Virginity what is it??? Eve and Adam, in the Eden’s garden was a true couple, thus they made love like a husband and a wife. Marital act was wanted by God before the original sin. Conjugal act in the marriage is not a sin. To have pleasure and to reach orgasm in the context of marital act is natural and supranatural.

Chastity in function of state life, it is okay, but per se virginity it is the state of life if persons are not wife or are not husband.

Natural and sacremental marriage supposes the marital sex for unity and procreativity.

Want to be an Angel for a human being is dangerous: Manicheism, catharism, jansenism, puritanism, victorianism, fideism, all these stuff are not catholic. Let’s be prudent. Marriage is naturel and a sacrement, be a nun or friar (brother) is not a sacrement.

I recently read a column by a priest in a Catholic newspaper where someone asked if you will still be married to your spouse in Heaven. He actually completely ignored this passage and said we don’t know. He speculated that it was a possibility. I was shocked.

Anyway, its not about it being better to be an Angel. He is relating the fact that there is no tradition that angels are married, but we understand them to be happy and with purpose. In fact, they are likely happier than we are. As such, Christ tells us that there is no marriage in Heaven but affirms that we won’t need marriage to be happy.

On earth, before the original sin, the marriage was and after the original sin, this natural institution and this natural contract still existed, then Jesus-Christ gave us the sacrement. That is wonderful for husband and wife to be in the same situation as Adam and Eve, even if there is always the consequencies of the first sin.

In the marriage, there is natural and supranatural love, and the natural and supranatural sex. It is a gift from Jesus and God with the Holy spirit. So beautiful. In the catholic marriage with the marital sex we are able to understand better the love of God for the Humanity. It is a manifestation of the true Love? Making love per se is not dirty, is not bad, is not only tolerable. That is good if and only if it is in the marriage and in the respect of the nature of act (unitive and procreative).

Men and women will not marry and give one another in marriage in Heaven, however, the image of a wedding feast of Christ and the Church in Heaven is not at all a foreign one :

“For the wedding day of the Lamb has come, his bride has made herself ready” (Revelation 19:7).

Some interesting insights by Blessed John Paul II on how that Canticle from the Book of Revelation applies in the Liturgy of the Hours and he also draws on some reflections of St. Ephrem concerning the mystical marriage - the Wedding Feast mentioned in the book of Revelation at the following link:

D-R Bible, Haydock Commentary:

Ver. 30. As the angels. Not in every respect, for the body shall be likewise raised with the soul, whilst the angels are pure spirits: but in this we shall be like unto angels, we shall be endowed with immortality, and impassibility; and our joys, like those of the angels, shall be wholly spiritual. (Jansenius) — If not to marry, nor to be married, be like unto angels, the state of religious persons, and of priests, is justly styled by the Fathers an angelic life. (St. Cyprian, lib. ii. de discip. et hab. Virg. sub finem.) (Bristow)
