Marriage outside catholic church is considered an invalid marriage?

My maternal grandparents had a civil marriage in 1913 (grandfather was Catholic and grandmother was Dutch Reformed - which caused some problems). Grandfather intended to raise the children as Catholic. On my mother’s baptismal papers, it reads ‘filia illegitima’ ie, illegitimate daughter of…

I think it would have been the same if they had married in a Dutch Reformed church.

We are all a bit ‘proper’ in our family and it’s amusing to think - there’s Mumsie at the grand old age of 93 sitting in the nursing home with a big smile on her face and most of the family that gathers around her are not aware that she’s considered illegitimate in the eyes of the Church.
