Technically two Catholics can’t get married outside the Church (without dispensation). The Church would not consider their marriage as valid and would consider them to be living in a state of sin.

If they are in mortal sin, they would not be able to recieve communion.

No, but they don’t have a valid marriage, are living in sin together (shacking up) and cannot take communion without mortally sinning again (so compounding their sin of fornication). Not anymore. The old 1918 code of canon law excommunicated Catholics who married in a Protestant church, but this is no longer in force.Are two Catholics excommunicated for marrying outside Catholic Church?
