I have a question/concern. My daughter married recently to a non-catholic. She was not practicing her faith. However, recently she has come back to the church. She went to confession and the priest told her she was living in sin and could not take communion because her marriage is not legal. She is very disheartended. She wants to participate in the catholic church and now has been told she cannot. What can I do or the church do to help? thanks! deb

The priest counseled her correctly-- she is in an irregular marriage and should refrain from Communion until the situation is rectified.

I am sorry he was incomplete in his information to her-- although the confessional is not the place for lengthy counseling. It seems he left her hanging as to how to correct the situation. This is very “fixable.”

She should make an appointment with the parish priest as soon as possible to discuss convalidating the marriage. This should be a fairly straightforward process unless there is a prior marriage in your son-in-law’s or her past. If there is a prior marriage then there is more to discuss.

She should start with her parish priest who can lay out the process for her once he knows all the facts.

My bride and I were in the same boat. However we were told by our tribunal cannon lawyer that as long as we didn’t share the bed as, then we can still receive communion. We went about one year without “it” and our marriage was con validated.
I would call your Tribunal Office and talk to them for the legalities.

The details of the formation instruction, timeline, and paperwork must be discussed with the priest. It varies by diocese, the bishop sets the requirements in his diocese.
