I have been married for 37 years in August , i love my wife more than ever but she had to have a hysterectemy about 20 years ago and she has completly lost all of her sex drive and just dont want to have anything to do with sex anymore when we talk about sex she just gets very mad at me we always end up having words exchange . my question is this being a true catholic i dont miss mass and try to do what im suppose to do with God why would it be a sin to have a sexual fantasy about my wife and to do masterbation i have needs that are hard to fight all the time and still love her very much and will always take care of her till we die Father at our church says its a sin to do this but what is a person supose to do we have tried to talk to doctors and nothing can be done she has to want to to have sex but does not want to she says she still loves me i have no intensions of devorce i realy wish God would help me in this problem i pray to him i think the catholic church should change the wording on masturbation its called self abuse but whats a guy supose to do anybody have any idea thanks

Listen to your priest. Yes, what you propose is a sin against the Sixth Commandment. A sin against the gift of sexuality and against your spouse.

Continue to urge her to seek counseling.

The ruling on masturbation (and several other sexual issues) is pretty harsh, I always think, so I can’t help but agree with you. On the other hand, I can see the Church point of view - it’s an interesting issue exactly how natural masturbation is, or whether it’s just become an unhealthy, perverting, (ubiquitous?) social norm :hmmm:

The church’s teachings on this are based on scripture and Apostolic tradition. It is a gift from God and it cannot be taken advantage of outside working Our Lord’s miracle of procreation.

We also ask homosexuals to be celibate in accordance with God’s law and it is no harder than your need for self gratification.

I am a man so I truly understand your pain but many men are in your position and fight the same battle and are victorious to a large extent, with God’s grace. Some are less successful and seek repentance when they fall, gather themselves up, and prepare to continue to battle.

Every teenager and most adult males have had your same prayer on their lips. Do not expect the church to change its view on the morality of this subject. Fight it with the rosary, scapular, penances, and devotions to the Mother of Purity, the Blessed Virgin.

Yes it’s a hard boat to row,as i am in the same boat with you.
The sin you are committing is called adultry. One is not being faithful to their spouse by committing the sin of mastrubation. Live your life faithfully as God is faithful. Question your own love, is it faithful? No, then it is you who must change not the Church.
i must also face these words as well in my struggle with my desirious flesh.

you say that your have been married x 37 years. would assume then that your wife is menopausal- or somewhat close to menopausal. one of the things that happens with menopause is the tissue in the vagina thins. this can make intercourse uncomfortable/painful for her, which of course could lead to decreased sex drive. unless this has already been evaluated, have her see a good ob/gyn physician for an exam.

Tell her to visit a good OB/Gyn and have a complete exam and evaluation. If she is menopausal, changes occur that make sex difficult. These changes can be dealt with using hormone therapy and counseling. She just has to be open-minded enough to seek help.

On a side note, this is one of the problems I have with people taking too much stock in the old testament. The old testament solution was to obtain a concubine. “To have and to hold” means more than just holding hands on a walk in the park. It means your wife is reneging on your marriage vows. My only suggestion is to find something she expects you to do often, and that you do not like to do, and stop doing it. Masturbation is a poor substitute.

It is a teaching of the Catholic Church … There is no stock taking at all.

Your advice is not at all Cathollic. Rather, find something she expects you to do and do it more. Spite is bad advice and will get you nowhere.

I didn’t know concubines were a catholic tradition. I know mistresses were always a privileged of the aristocracy, but I am sure the church frowned upon it.1) How do we know his wifes behavior is not out of spite? 2) potato potatoh…Some people call things bargaining, others call it spite. Marriage is a constant negotiation. If the man was delivering pizza for 20 years in exchange for free pizza instead of cash, that would be a failure to negotiate.
“Because the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ is the head of the church. He is the saviour of his body”

In theory, according to the natural links between wife and husband ( the natural contract that is at the spring of interpersonnal obligations within couple and the natural institution that is at the spring of duties ), I think that your wife has an natural contractual moral obligation to go to the medical doctor and to take treatment - pills, exercices, psychological therapy with catholic doctor, and to be followed by a priest, if for instance:

She does not want, ever to be active during marital sex;
She does not want natural and moral foreplay and / or natural and moral afterplay;
She is not, ever at the initiative of sexual intercourses;
She is refusing the marital act;
She has problems of vaginismus;
She has no pleasure;
She has no orgasm;
She seems to be frigid;

She is in the moral obligation and the moral duty to ask herself:

What are my psychological issues about my sex drive?
What are my physiological issues about my sex drive?
What are my theological issues about my sex drive?
What are my philosophical issues about my sex drive?
What are my cultural issues about my sex drive?
What are my educational issues about my sex drive?
What are my social issues about my sex drive?
What are my natural moral issues about my sex drive?
What are my supra natural moral issues about my sex drive?
What are my issues about my sex drive?
What are my moral obligations and my moral duties concerning the marital act?
What is the level of my sexual marital love in my marriage?
Am I in love with my husband?
How have I to love my husband within my marriage?
Have I to force myself to have sex for pleasing my husband and doing my marital debt?
What are the rights of my husband about the sex ?
What are my obligations on the sex?
Why am I like that, no marital act with my husband?

Hi hornpout,

It would be a sin because the Church has said so and the Church alone has the authority to say what constitutes a sin. For a more sophisticated take (i.e., for all the vast philosophy on the topic behind the teaching), see Edward Feser’s Aquinas.

There is an ancillary issue here, which is your wife’s duty to you. Marriage exists in part as a remedy for the concupiscence you’re presently experiencing. By not being attentive to your needs and allowing you to entertain thoughts of sinful self-indulgence, your wife is failing in her duty to you. It’s at least venially sinful and probably mortally sinful on her part. This is a source of unholiness in your life and an unnecessary stress on your marriage.

I will never understand the whole “but I don’t want it!” attitude. So what? Doing your duty sucks sometimes. I don’t like having to put money in the collection plate, but I do it. Not every sexual encounter has to be about youyouyou. Do people not get it? That the male sex drive is a real, urgent, toxic presence in our lives? That it causes us physical suffering and mental torment? That it is so powerful it can impede our judgment and induce us to sin? That, in those cases where it cannot be controlled, the antidote to it is for the one woman the man has married, who has vowed to love him (i.e., to will what is best for him) and to whom he has vowed total commitment, to show up for five minutes? Hell, she can sleep through it! Cooking dinner takes more effort.

A good ob/gyn can often help with a lack of female desire. The best solution, IMHO, would be to fix your relationship, if it is possible, rather than to break it further, which is what you propose.

She seems to be frigid;

Why does she refuse to have a talk about her sex drive??? Does she know why? Why and what are her reasons? What for?

Why does she refuse to force herself to practice the marital act that is her marital debt? What are her good reasons, if they are existing?? What does she say about that?

Is she touched by the conjugal jansenism, the marital puritanism, the marital victorianism, the conjugal rigorism, the marital moralism, the marital neo-victorianism, the marital neo-puritanism…etc?

She is in a moral obligation to search why she is like that, no talk about sex and no marital act.

She has to agree to talk about her sex drive problem with you (her husband), with a doctor and with a priest, it is her moral obligation and her moral duty. Woman has to assume her feminity, she has to want to be a female. Wife has to give her whole feminity to her husband. Wife has to receive the virility of her husband.

The wife has to be an educator, a teacher, a professor, a doctor, a nurse, a master, a thinker, a philosopher, and a lover for her husband; the wife has to be a schoolgirl, a student and a follower of her husband.

The woman is or should be the New Eve of her Man - the Fiancée, the Bride, the Sweetheart, the Love, the Mistress, the Lover, the Beloved, the Muse, the Friend, the Best-friend, the Girlfriend, the Helper, the Soul-Mate, the Companion, the Partner, the Associate, the Wife and the Potential Mother, the Female Opposite Number, the Alterity, the Complementarity, The Person who reveals in me, my part of feminity and helps my masculinity -.

She should to pray the Holy Trinity for getting again her holy sexual conjugal mood and her sex drive.

She should force herself sometimes and to make efforts in order to give satisfaction to your husband, then normally, the nature being, she could find again her conjugal sex drive.

She should trust to her husband, he can be a sexual teacher for her, she has to ask him to remotivate her, by a new natural intimity without sex, in the first time, in the respect of natural law.

Is she against the non sexual intimity between you and her?

Wow, you have built a whole philosophy here.

How about asking what the husband may or may not have done to cause or help the situation.
Sex is supposed to be pleasurable for both spouses. Is that working out, or has the husband failed to give his wife pleasure?
How about the psychological aspect. A healthy woman can not desire a man sexually if other parts of the relationship are not in order. Does he speak to her, communicate with her, have interest in her life in all other aspects, or does she only feel wanted or most wanted in the bed? The worst thing a woman can feel is that she is being used as a physical release and little more and that her husband is more interested in her body than in her mind.

You cannot just say: Sex is your duty, so get on with it woman.
Thats very degrading. There must be psychological or physical reasons for the problem. Making sex into a legalistic matter will only make resentment grow between spouses.

The husband is in the moral obligation to make the same thing. He has to question himself, of course.

According to the first message of this thread, his wife has been refusing the marital sex and has been refusing a talk about her sex drive for 20 years, after an a hysterectemy??? Why this modidication after surgery? An hypothesis, psychological issues because of lack of her uterus and thus the marital act is not useful, as to make a baby is not possible??? For her, she is not a woman because fecundation is not possible???

She needs to search a solution for her and for her husband, it is her duty and it is her obligation, in the respect of natural law.

An hypothesis, these are the psychological issues, the philosophical issues, the theological issues, the social issues, the cultural issues, because of lack of her uterus; thus in her thought the marital act is not useful, because to make a baby is not possible?? For her, she is not a woman because her " womb" is not. The marital act would be, in her mind, only for making babies. The other roles and meanings would be, perhaps, forgotten or not considered like normal, good and wanted by God. A misunderstanding, a misconception, a false point of view, a wrong theology, a false idea…etc.

She needs to search a medical, psychological, spiritual, theological, religious, cultural, social solution for her and for her husband, it is her moral duty from the natural institution and it is her moral obligation from the natural contract, in the respect of natural law.

Her, she has to force herself to change, steps by steps, if that is objectively possible.

Him, he has to be patient and to pray.
