Maybe this belongs in Prayer Requests, but I really feel like I need to vent. I hope this is okay. Been married for 4 months and, man…

Got married Dec., conceived our 1st child 1 mo later. Then in Feb., my disabled MIL moved in with us.

Husband drinks often. This has been a problem long before we met. He gets mean and says horrible things. He knows where it hurts. Then, he either doesn’t remember the next day, or he justifies it because I: don’t keep a clean house (dirty dishes in the sink last time), didn’t make him dinner (he says he doesn’t like to eat when he’s “relaxing” with beers), or, I “rejected” him sexually. Which brings me to my next point.

He watched porn. A lot. This was also a known issue before we got married (bad discernment, I know. It looked like we were making improvements in our problems. Again…I know.) If he’s bored, he uses. If I’m “out” due to studying for a test, nausea from morning sickness, asleep at 3 am, etc., he uses porn. And it’s my fault. Even when I let him know it’s just a little while, rain check in 1/2 hr or as soon as my stomach settles. He used porn the days leading up to our wedding!! and we had…some difficulties. Oh, did he get scared then, swearing he would never even glance at porn or masturbate again. He used porn before our 1st appt. with the OB to see our baby. I was livid, if memory serves correct, I initiated and found out. I admit many times he initiates now, I react by shrinking away/getting annoyed. It may be the “flirtatious” way he touches me, like in public or around his mom, the way he asks (very demanding “give me, now”), I’m studying and very stressed, or he’s waking me up in the middle of the night/REM AGAIN (for some reason people love to do this and get offended when disorientation and amplification of any noise & stimulation for the next 10-15 mins gets me very ornery). It might be he’s drunk and acting like a a-h*le. I WANT to be intimate, to be able to relax and enjoy it, but feel like I can’t say “not just now” because he stalks off angry, or, if he takes it well, I’ll just find him in another room with his porn. All after I think “How sweet! He understands. I’ll hurry up and finish here.” When I do go initiate (hw is done, MIL is in bed, morning sickness has passed, whatever, I’m now able to think about intimacy) he’s usually drunk or “done”.

He blames NFP for many things, calling it feminist bs, insists it doesn’t work, he just KNEW we’d get pregnant quick. Though he was fine for a while during marriage prep, and we WERE aware of being fertile when we conceived. He wants me to use the Pill so we can be “responsible adults”, but he is adamant about not having to abstain, and when I point out that he can use a condom if he loves contraception that much, he gets defensive. Somehow, it’s way more hassle/demeaning than having your body chemistry all screwed up. I just fixed an old hormone imbalance, too, so religious reasons aside, I’m not eager to have them messed up again. He’s also always wanting to engage in acts not open to life, both as an alternative to abstinence during NFP, and in itself. Toned down a bit after a bad incident. One thing that hurts me is his past, which he does not appear to be repentant of, and I feel like it fuels the justification in his heart/mind that certain acts are owed to him. 😦 After all, everyone else in America does it.

And just last night, he told me he was now often fantasizing about cheating on me because I turn him down often and that, as a wife, I should give in whenever, always super submissive without “giving him attitude” (This time I’d turned him down for 1 thing (I was probably wrong to do so), but definitely not the rest of the day. And yes, when he told me this (the cheating thing) he had a few beers in him. But I’m hard-pressed to believe, at least in his case, that people don’t tend to spill their guts when they’re drunk.)

Why did I marry him? We love each other. I have no doubt he loves me and I love him. We’ve gone through a lot and were working hard to be better. Getting guidance from the deacon who would officiate at our wedding. He even had a major epiphany in October, feast of Our Lady of Victory. I remember because I had a car accident that triggered it. He realized we needed God in our marriage. He started to turn back to the Church. But here we are, dealing with all these…demons. And I’m far from perfect, so I acknowledge my part.

But it feels like I’m living with Jekyll&Hyde many times. One moment he’s professing serious good things (like, that he would never be unfaithful to me, that I’m a wonderful and sweet person, that he appreciates the help I give with his mom) and then, either immediately if he’s drinking or later something sets him off (usually while drinking), he’ll pound in the exact opposite. That I’m a horrible wife, that he married wrong and he should’ve married a woman from the army or gone to Saudi Arabia/Mexico to find a “real” wife, that I’m stupid, etc.

To top it off, I’ve been battling depression on and off for about 6 years now, complete with suicidal fantasies, anxiety (car accident didn’t help), and low self-esteem pretty much all my life. I’m a grouchy, easily irritated person with little energy and I hate it. My husband is the nicest, most cheery person (when he’s not drinking, that is). I want to fix this. I have a list of Al-Anon meetings to go to very soon, and will bring up my depression with the OB next week, see if he can refer us to treatment. Loathe as I am to take drugs while pregnant, I want this black hole gone. Also need to start praying more, like the priest instructed during confession. I’ve been struggling with faith. Part of it is guilt, part of it is resentment and anger.

I know I need to fix a lot in myself. Can’t change others, learned that the hard way. I just hope our marriage gets better instead of worse. We’ve got a lot of problems.😦 Please, prayers are desperately needed…

Our Father, Who art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
AMEN

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that
never was it known that anyone who fled to thy
protection, implored thy help, or sought thy
intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this
confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins,
my mother. To thee do I come, before thee I kneel, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the World Incarnate,
despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear
and answer them. Please hear my Prayer to Save
this Marriage.
O St. Mary,we pray this through your name and in the name of Jesus
Christ your son.
AMEN

A prayer for you to say:

Dear Lord, my marriage needs healing and
restoration. I ask that you would forgive me and
my spouse of any selfishness and pride. Please
show me my sins and give me the grace to ask
my spouse for forgiveness in these areas. Please
do the same for him/her. Give us the desire to
want to keep working on our marriage. Your
Word tells us that whatever you have put
together no man can separate. Lord, help us to
work with you and not against you. Give us the
desire to not want to separate. Help us to lay
down our rights. Help us to stop being focused
on what our needs may be and begin to focus on
what you desire for us. Help us to both get back
on the same page. Lord, restore to us the love we
both felt when we first met. Rekindle the flames
of passion, desire, serving and giving. I now
recognize that Satan would love to destroy our
marriage. I rebuke Satan off of my marriage in
Jesus name. I determine now that I am in this for
the long haul. My spouse and I made vows for a
life time – not just for when we feel like it. I
determine today that I will not break my vows.
We are a team. Lord, teach us how to love, how
to serve and how to give of ourselves. My love
for my spouse is not big enough to make this
marriage work – I ask that it would be you loving
___________ through me. In Jesus name I pray.
amen

It normally takes people 10+ years of solid effort to get a marriage as bad as the one you just described. Newlyweds do not typically fantasize about cheating on their brand new spouses, and they certainly do not tell their brand new spouses about those feelings.

I’m really sorry you’re experiencing this.

Definitely do counseling, Al Anon, talk to your OB, your priest, talk to everybody you can (but probably sticking to those that have confidentiality rules). I’m sure you need all the confidential support you can get. And try to maintain your relationships with friends and family.

Also, please have a look at this checklist

abuse-against-women.com/abuse_checklist.html

and (if you have the time and energy) read Lundy Bancroft’s “Why Does He Do That: Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men” but don’t leave the book lying around.

Think seriously about where you would go if you ever found yourself in danger and make sure you’ve always got $20 or so in cash on hand and at least a half tank of gas, if you can manage it.

I am afraid that your situation is almost certainly going to deteriorate radically once the baby arrives.

Be careful!

Best wishes!

I am so sorry to hear of your struggles In your marriage and I am amazed at your willingness to worth through this. It sure sounds as if you are on the right path with speaking with the deacon, Al Anon meetings to go to and speaking with your OB about your depression.

I have had many friends tell me Al Anon was so helpful to them and I hope it is for you too.

I will pray for your husband to also seek help he needs for his issues with alcohol. It seems that is a large part of the problem.

I hope things improve soon and I pray for the restoration of your marriage. With God all things are possible so “hang in there” and pray when you can.

Mary.

Did he not realize before you got married that unnatural acts were not going to be on the menu?

THIS^^^.
Maybe you should just seek an annulment. I don’t see this getting even remotely better. I think (based on what you have said) that neither of you entered into this marriage with the correct intent.
You say you love each other.
Love doesn’t look like this. Not even a little bit.
See your priest and prepare to exit. Protect yourself, take Xantippe’s advice. Find a safe place. If he’s serious about saving the marriage, he’ll get help for the alcoholism. If not…cut him loose before you have more children to worry about.
I seldom say this, but that has to be the hugest dirty laundry list ever.
I wish I honestly thought it was worth saving. But the porn is bad, the booze is bad, the blaming is bad, the refusal to take responsibility for his sexual problems is bad…and you’re supporting and taking care of his mom? (bless her heart).
No. This is not marriage. Not even a little bit.

10+ YEARS?!? Yeesh!

I’m definitely decided to start reaching out more face-to-face. Starting with Al-Anon and hopefully a therapist for the depression, which I never had professionally addressed until the very end of the first year of uni. Thank you for the checklist and all the good advice! Unfortunately, my dh does show a lot of abusive-type tendencies. Very good at twisting history and words around to suit him. He can try to fool himself. He also seems to have addictive tendencies, with the alcohol and sexual stuff as his main outlets. I think that’s why it’s so easy for him to say stuff like that to hurt me (NOT that it makes it any better!!) With relatives who have similar addictive tendencies, I know it can be a looong wait for them to change. I do try and make it a habit to always have a decent amount of gas and some cash (good for any emergency, really) that’s no problem.

That book, I actually saw a suggestion for it on another thread and looked it up right away, and found an excerpt. Again, thank you, I want it and plan to get it as part of treatment.

Though he wanted to wait a couple years before having kids, he is actually very happy about our baby and focused on providing for our family. I do worry about when the baby’s here not so much about physical violence, but verbal/psychological. I don’t want our children to ever witness either of us putting the other down, turning them against the other, but I don’t think that can happen unless we learn to stop fighting dirty (especially him). We’re both stubborn but he’s louder!

It’s not going to be that easy to fix.
IMHO.
Been there.
Not an easy road, and possibly going nowhere. Sorry, that’s just my take on it.
Good luck.

Mary.
That’s good to hear that Al Anon has been helpful! We actually attended an open AA meeting a good while back at my insistence, and I was blown away. Been wanting to go back because it was such an amazing and insightful experience, but gotta give Al Anon a chance!

Oh, Mary, he actually has gone through help programs. 😦 A few years back, he went to rehab for a few months. This is where it gets messed up and I don’t know how to feel about this…I was a sophomore in college hunting for an apartment (already had a room nabbed on campus for when summer session would start), but because I was doing bad in classes and still legally their dependent, my parents came and dragged me back home…10 hours away. I should probably mention that I was also staying in dh’s apt at the time (we were still dating) because my would-be roommate had left town during finals without giving me a key to her stay at her place like we’d agreed while waiting for our lease to start on the new apt. Anyway, they didn’t like that.

He’d finished rehab and was doing good, it was only a few weeks we got to hang out before I left, after a semester of barely seeing each other. It was only going to be for the summer. Then that turned into a long semester. Then two… Dh was sober for 9 months, but he fell into a deep depression and said screw it. She’s not coming back. Those were bad times, and there was a lot of hurting on both sides…I don’t think he ever really confronted his root issues, though. Alcohol just seems to compound the negativity that stems from them. At this point, he doesn’t have much interest in trying true sobriety again. So I can only do my thing and hope it helps. I’ve mentioned my interest in Al-anon and it seem to make him uncomfortable, like “Is it really that bad? I’m not that bad, am I?” Ummm…riiight…
One positive note, it doesn’t seem like he can drink or “party” as much as before; he often dozes off before finishing half his stash in the fridge. Then again, maybe I need to get him to go see a doctor to see if something’s wrong.

Did he not realize before you got married that unnatural acts were not going to be on the menu?
Hehe, I told him! But apparently he chose to shut off his ears right as I was explaining that yes, certain things are permitted but only as foreplay. He’s being willfully ignorant if he thinks I wasn’t upfront multiple times before we got married.

Don’t leave your husband alone with the baby.
I’ll definitely keep a close eye on him. Can’t say I won’t leave them alone together, because I really don’t think he would hurt a child, especially his child (he’s very anti-child abuse, knowing first hand what it’s like. He’s way more against swatting/spanking even, than I am.) Honestly, I think I’m one more likely to lash out physically, just from how I feel when I get real angry with someone. I could not live with myself if I injured my baby, though.

But addressing your concern, one wrong move, one strike…out.

THIS^^^.

No. This is not marriage. Not even a little bit.
Yeah, reading over the laundry list I was seriously like…DAMN! How do we STILL have all this filth in our relationship?? I’m not sure what you mean by us not entering with the right intent…like we were too immature/naive to go in with all our particular baggage?

He’s cut down on his drinking (honestly, I think our guardian angels intervene regularly because he also can’t handle nearly as much as he could even a year or two ago before his body says ‘enough’ and he curls up to sleep. He did go through rehab about 3 years ago and was sober for 9 months, but depression got the best of him. My theory, he never addressed the root issues leading to his addictive/destructive habits. But I honestly thought he had grown up a lot, especially when it came time to getting help for his mom (she was in a nursing home for a long time, he finally got a job that pays well enough he could afford to move her out of there. Of course, it helps that I’m here to help watch her during his work hours.) That was something that he’d been suffering guilt with for a long time. And it really wasn’t his fault, mostly. Still, with all his bad experiences from the past, he’s the one who cared enough to get her out of there. MIL has so many health issues now, I could write a book, but she’s improved exponentially under our watch. And he’s learned that a lot of times, this wife is right. I’ve brought up that I want to start attending Al-anon and that seems to spook him (‘It’s not that bad, is it? I’m not that bad, am I? Am I??’)

I’m done trying to change him, for the most part. For now. Guide, prod, okay, but I’m not going to carry guilt or anything like that that’s not mine. I’ve got enough of my own baggage to process and clean out without having to take on somebody else’s, not to mention a baby on the way. I can’t really help anyone else out until then, so in the meantime it’ll be Al-anon, looking into therapists/counselors for this long-untreated depression and anxiety. He seems to take it to heart when he sees that I’m looking for help because I’m unhappy.

It’s not going to be that easy to fix.
IMHO.
Been there.
Not an easy road, and possibly going nowhere. Sorry, that’s just my take on it.

Thanks. That’s been my view on it a lot of time, too. By far, not an easy road…

And you married him knowing ALL of this???
Keep in mind, that HE has to want to give up the bad behaviors.
Good that you go to Al-Anon yourself for the clarity it will afford you. But I get the impression you think that if you just do better yourself…then he will change. It doesn’t work that way. I hate to sound so negative but you sound like you just wish it will change.

***Do this:
Go back and read all of your posts like they were written by your little sister.
What would YOUR advice to her be? ***

Babies are very small, very vulnerable, and often very irritating to people that aren’t used to dealing with them.

You shouldn’t leave a child for a single minute in the care of anybody you don’t trust 100%.

Yeah.

So, what do you say when he asks, “is it really that bad?”
At this point, I just give him the look of ‘Are you seriously asking this?’ Telling him that, yes, it’s a major problem because he starts acting like Hyde, doesn’t work. He knows I take issue with it, and why, as I’ve explained in detail many times, quoting verbatim some examples of his verbal assault. I’m the one who lives with the memories. But he feels justified in drinking because a.) It’s he weekend, he wants to relax (I’ve pointed out how ending up raging mad over over the slighting thing is a funny way to “relax”) b.) I “abandoned” him when he had gotten sober and so, according to him, sobriety doesn’t help anything in the end. Any excuse to drink.
