When there is a marriage does there have to be a particular said formula, or prayer to make the marriage valid?

the rite for the sacrament of matrimony has to be used in a Catholic wedding. Non-Catholics also enter into a valid marriage if they exchange consent in front of witnesses and are otherwise free to marry and enter into marriage with the intent to accomplish the union intended and to enjoy the fruits and responsibilities of marriage. Don’t know if I understand the question.

Can. 1056 The essential properties of marriage are unity and indissolubility, which in Christian marriage obtain a special firmness by reason of the sacrament.
Can. 1057 §1. The consent of the parties, legitimately manifested between persons quali-fied by law, makes marriage; no human power is able to supply this consent.
§2. Matrimonial consent is an act of the will by which a man and a woman mutually give and accept each other through an irrevocable covenant in order to establish marriage.

Can. 1059 Even if only one party is Catholic, the marriage of Catholics is governed not only by divine law but also by canon law, without prejudice to the competence of civil authority concerning the merely civil effects of the same marriage.
Further, I think that the Catholic Church will regard a marriage by members of an Orthodox Church to be in accord with the rules of that Church to be regarded as valid., but I don’t have a source for that.

Are you asking about the formula for the vows? If so, yes, there is a particular formula. It’s included in the Rite of Marriage.

Although a couple COULD write their own vows, the priest is advised to submit them to the diocesan Marriage Tribunal to be checked to see that they don’t include something that would invalidate the marriage. Much easier to just go with what’s already in the ritual.
