Marriage Question

My husband and I got married a year ago by a civil union out of state due to the fact that he was still int he military and it was hard for us to have a formal wedding as we were apart from one another due to myself finishing up school. We want to have a formal traditional ceremony/mass in the Catholic church now that he is home so we can celebrate our marriage with our family and friends the way that we wanted to truly have it. Is this still possible? I know I have looked into it and have seen that the marriage has to be convalidated as it is not the proper way for a Catholic to get married. Does this mean that we cannot have a true ceremony? If this is the case what would we have to do to do so? Would we have to have the marriage annulled or a divorce and then get re-married by the church? We are willing to go to all means and do whatever it takes to have our marriage approved by the Catholic church and to have the proper marriage and wedding cermony

Speak to your priest. You could have a simple “convalidation” ceremony (just a priest and two witnesses) or a full wedding ceremony depending on your budget and church availability. Either would fulfill the church’s requirements.

I’d strongly encourage you and your husband to live as a chaste unmarried couple until your proper wedding, though there is no need to formally divorce.

Yes, this is right, the con validation is your actual marriage date in the eyes of the church. This is a life long commitment. And it requires all the same preparation of a marriage, and it can be as beautiful as any other marriage in the catholic church, as this the date that you will be wedded and joined by God. There will be a canonical investigation, a pre-cana, etc. I usually recommend the wedding where one of the families live, like your parents or his parents.

But to answer your question this will be the wedding under God.

Thank you for your help and your response. We have recently been in contact with a local Catholic Church and priest and have found out all of the necessary information and steps that we need to take to be married in the church and be under God’s roof.
