Marriage without family consent?

was recently in a discussion with a friend, he’s from Nigeria and he seems to be under the impression that the church will not marry people if they parents oppose the marriage for example.

to him, apparently that’s the same thing as elopement.

correct me if I’m wrong, but I didnt think parents’ consent was required?

because families could oppose certain marriages for all kinds of weird reasons. i.e. if one person doen’st make enough money, type of job, how one of the spouses looks eTC…

he seems to say that if parents don’tlike a marriage, there’s probably a good reason for it, which, obviously in certain cases, there could be.

and he was trying to convince me what talking about family consent is a necessary part of marriage prep.

of course, I’ve never done marriage prep so I have no idea.

maybe it’s more of a cultural thing for them? or have I really missed something somewhere?

You are correct. Parental consent is not required for two adults to marry in the Church.

If a minor child seeks marriage, the following canon applies:

Can. 1071 §1. Except in a case of necessity, a person is not to assist without the permission of the local ordinary at:

6/ a marriage of a minor child when the parents are unaware or reasonably opposed;

6/ a marriage of a minor child when the parents are unaware or reasonably opposed;

There are also state laws concerning the age at which minors may marry without parental consent. The Church abides by these laws.
