Does anybody know if it is permissible for a married woman to be received into an Orthodox Benedictine order as a sister? My wife is ready to be baptized and Chrismated into a small Orthodox jurisdiction, after which she will be received as a Benedictine Sister. This seems odd to me - it is my feeling that she could be received as an Oblate, but not as a Sister. She will be wearing a habit when she is at church, but not outside of the church.

Also, is there any difference in practice between Orthodox and Catholic Benedictines?

I know there are Orthodox Benedictine Oblates in the official jurisdictions.

For more information, see this site:

westernorthodox.ca/

However, no Benedictine Oblate, so far as I know, wears any habit.

And there are no “Orthodox Benedictines” with OSB after their names in the official jurisdictions. Orthodox do not use post-nomial initials. This is not to say there are no Orthodox monasteries (both Eastern and Western) that use the RSB in who or in part.

But how could your wife be received as a “Sister” without your consent? Something here is not adding up.

And you’ve not said what jurisdiction you are in, or your wife is going to–are they different, and if so, why?
