A friend and I were having a discussion, and neither of us could answer this question:
Were any Popes or Bishops in the history of the Church married? I ask this since celibacy is a discipline and not dogma, and I understand that it was enforced towards the end of the 11th or 12th century, correct me if I am wrong please. Therefore is it possible there were married Bishops or Popes, and theoretically, is it possible we could have a married Pope if the celibacy discipline was lifted and a Priest was eventually elected Pope?
And I am aware that St. Peter was married…just to narrow that answer down a tad…
Thanks all,
DU
