I am looking for a little support and information about being challenged about my Catholic faith. I’m a little overwhelmed by the volume of threads on this site and I’m not sure where to begin. I will post my situation here and go from here.
My husband of almost 19 years is the one challenging me. We were married in the Church in 1990. Over the years he has asked me questions and just dropped the subject soon after starting. Now over the last 2.5 years or so he continues to challenge me about the Catholic belief about Salvation, Mary, and Baptism to name a couple of topics. He is now getting upset with me If he finds out I shared anything about it to our son who is 11 yo. I am very torn with staying married, or not since I feel this issue will never be solved as it has been going on for so long.

All I know is that we are called as Christians to give an answer to anyone who would question our beliefs, (1 Peter 3:15). I have found that as I go deeper in my faith, read Scripture more often, and other spiritual texts, have found it much easier to answer people who question my faith, to the point now where no one in my family will call me out on anything, as I can easily shut them down 🙂 I get the general feeling that your husband in times past has been testing you, and now seems to have gotten more confidence to “up the ante”.

I can’t give you much advice on the second issue, except that you have an obligation to raise your children as Cathlolics…he was at the wedding, right? I think that was part of your vows…

good luck to you with this, i’ll say a prayer for you and your family =]

im pretty sure if you were married in the church then he promised to have your children raised in the faith. my dad was raised protestant (doesn’t practice anything really… if anything, he is a Christmas and Easter Catholic hehe) and my mom is Catholic. they were married in the Catholic church, and she raised us five children Catholic. Does your husband have a religion he practices? If not, then there shouldn’t be an argument about raising your son Catholic. It is good for a child to know God and to have a moral upbringing.

When you married in the Church, your non-Catholic husband was made aware of your promise to do all you can do to raise your children as Catholics.

Since he is tossing questions at you, I would suggest the two of you begin some studies together. If your Parish offers some Apologetics classes, that would be a good place to begin.

Here is a good study set if your Parish does not have such a class:

Another is to start listening to Catholic Answers Live every day - you can download the programs and listen on your computer.

Maybe get some books, I’d begin with this one:

Thank you for your suport. We currently attend a non-denominational church “evangelical”. In referance to him being at the wedding, my husband states that he only agreed so we could get married. I am going to keep persueing more knowledge and grow stronger. We may have reached a point where we agree to disagree. That usualy only last breifly. CAT

The most important thing for you to do is to go to Mass, go every week. Stregthen your faith through the Sacraments.

Prayers!
