Married civil, now daughter cannot receive communion

It honestly sounds like the problem has been that meeting with the priest to fix things was not a priority for this couple because of husband’s work schedule. And as long as the previous priest was letting them “get away with it”, it was never going to be a priority.

New priest laid down the law, so now they see it’s important, and hopefully will address it.
 
The Father said because she was not married in the church. He would not even finish in the confessional
Perhaps she shared that she was having marital relations with her husband (civil) and had no intention of stopping or waiting for the Catholic convalidation (if her husband becomes Catholic.) We can only guess. All of this should have been taken care of before their civil wedding - right?
