Okay so my friend is a member of the church of jesus christ of Latter-day Saints (AKA mormon) she was talking to me about being married after you died. There is an eternal marriage

I was like that doesn’t seem right but I just wanted to know where is it in the bible that people are NOT married forever?
and how do we as catholics know there are not 3 heavens?

thanks

Hi Patty,

Jesus specifically said that in heaven there are no wives or husbands, but we are all like angels. (Matthew** 22**, 23 ff) In the context in which He said this, He meant that there is no sexual activity in heaven. He did not say that the husband/wife relationship would disappear entirely . What this might mean in actual practice, we do not know… it’s a surprise!

Patty, see this regarding the “three heavens”:

I believe we will be married in heaven…just not how we are on earth…I think flat out saying that we won’t be married in heaven makes heaven seem rather dull. After listening to Marcellino D’Ambrosio and reading some of Fr. Cantelamessa’s (Sp?) writings on heaven, I do think we will be. Of course there won’t be sex or child rearing or cooking dinner, but we’ll still know who are spouses are and love them unconditionally because our love in heaven will be perfect…remember, everything doesn’t change in heaven, rather its perfected.

Thats my opinion anyways

Correct. We will be married in Heaven. We are the Bride of Christ.

But in our vows we say till death do we part. There is no mention of reuniting as husben and wife in heaven.

What you say specifically contradicts what Jesus told us. He did not say there is marriage in heaven but not like that on earth. He said there is NO MARRIAGE IN HEAVEN. As Jesus does not lie there is litle point in debating if there is marriage there or not.

Just for a little reference

Luk 20:34 And Jesus said to them: The children of this world marry and are given in marriage:
Luk 20:35 But they that shall be accounted worthy of that world and of the resurrection from the dead shall neither be married nor take wives.
Luk 20:36 Neither can they die any more for they are equal to the angels and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

There is no marriage, as we now know it, in Heaven. Obviously there is some form of marriage. Revelation is very specific about the marriage feast of the lamb. What we need to remember is that marriage here on earth is but a shadow of what real marriage is. All our human relationships will be perfected in Heaven.

You’re right. There is the marriage feast of the lamb. The Lamb=Jesus. We are the Bride of Christ. We are married to Him. There will be no marriage between man and woman.

You guys make Heaven seem so boring. Here’s what Fr. Cantalamessa says, and while it may not be dogma I find it very poignant

Interpreting this saying of Jesus wrongly, some have claimed that marriage will have no follow-up in heaven. But with his reply Jesus is rejecting the caricature the Sadducees presented of heaven, as if it were going to be a simple continuation of the earthly relationship of the spouses. Jesus does not exclude the possibility that they might rediscover in God the bond that united them on earth.
According to this vision, marriage does not come to a complete end at death but is transfigured, spiritualized, freed from the limits that mark life on earth, as also the ties between parents and children or between friends will not be forgotten. In a preface for the dead the liturgy proclaims: “Life is transformed, not taken away.” Even marriage, which is part of life, will be transfigured, not nullified.
As I said, it will not be like marriage here on Earth, and Fr. Cantalamessa states the case better then I can

Marcellino D’Ambrosio seems to be along the same lines in the Catholic Radio segment from a couple weeks ago. Here’s the link:

And heres another interesting article where a Bishop says the usual images we have of heaven are dull, and I’d agree

The words of your vows “until death do us part” are so sad. It does not have to be that way. Eternal families are possible. The LDS friend whose comment led someone to start this thread knows that.

Also, our knowledge that there are three heavens is consistent with the Bible, but not predominantly based upon the Bible. Rather, it is based mostly upon latter-day revelation.

:angel1: I am surprised at the postings wherein people are commenting that because they will not be reunited with their earthly spouses they will find Heaven “dull.”

How can being in the presence of our Divine Lord be dull?:heaven:

Isn’t that why we are Catholic - to aspire to be in Our Lord’s presence?:amen:

I agree. To say Heaven will be boring if there is no marriage there is an insult to God.
Its also an insult to all living single people here on earth by implying life is boring if you are not married.

If the marriage bond were not dissolved by the death of one of the partners, how could the Church allow widows and widowers to remarry?

👍 👍 👍 👍 What D’Ambrosio & Cantalamessa or anyone else may say is of no weight if it contradicts the gospels. Who gives a pin what they say ? Jesus says the opposite. There is no marriage, nor giving in marriage, in the next life -and that is the end of it.
